JA-VOLE, HERR TIMOTHY
Peter Crabtree rejoices in Chichester's win over Broxbourne, but he wanted more ...

JA-VOLE, HERR TIMOTHY

With half of the Brox superstars sunning themselves in the Gulf, we actually started to think that we might just leapfrog them and top the table after this match. Then Rodders went and lost his match and jumped straight on a plane back home, and thence to Chichester, the swine. These colonials really have no sense of fair play, do they?

Anyway, having thought that the delights of callipygian antics were over for the time being, lo and behold (well it is nearly Christmas!) we had another episode to enjoy with the appearance of Caroline Chaloner. Obviously being a City lawyer is good for one’s well-being, as she strikes the ball really well, moves well, and certainly is well qualified for our favourite epithet. But (and isn’t there always one?) she was up against a Suzie Pierrepont who seems to grow in stature every time she plays at the moment, and despite some fine rallies, the result never looked in doubt, and Chi started off with a win.

On the adjacent court, the new slim-line Captain Vole was to parade his talents against another fast-rising Broxer in Alister Walker. Ranked 70 in the World, this lad has excellent mobility, and is no mug with the racket. A nip-and-tuck first game went the Vole’s way, but a lack of focus and aggression in his approach led to him being out-played for the next 2 games by the visitor, who deservedly took a 2-1 lead. The fourth was a total contrast, and Vole slapped a few nicks, attacked the ball and dominated the game more than a 9-7 score-line would suggest. So, a decider to come, and it was full value. In the end, our little hero edged it 11-9 to give the Chi a 2-0 match advantage.

Ben Garner took on the evergreen Danny Meddings meanwhile, and the contrast in styles is probably matched by the contrast in years! The arch stroker of the ball against the young swinger (or so his shirt says!), and it was a close run thing for a bit. 10-8 to Benj in the 1st followed by a bit of a stuffing 3-9 in the 2nd suggested a close match, but in the end Danny’s poor old pins gave out, and Benny romped home for the loss of 3 more points to secure the match win for Chi.

Now before the next bit, I have been taken to task a bit for my comments on Laurent’s match against Lee, basically for being a tad harsh. If I caused offence, I apologise, but I just say what I think. Azzi’s performance against Alex Stait was also poor, but for different reasons. The squash was OK, but the commitment was decidedly below par, and I don’t think he’ll be doing it again, somehow.

The top of the line-up featured South African No.1 and World No.31 Rodney Durbach taking on our very own No.45 Jelly. This was a fair old match, with two good honest pro’s giving their all. The first went to Rodders 13-11, with Jelly cruising to 9-5 in the next. The third was a bit one-sided going to the visitor 9-2, and we then had another cracker that could have gone either way, but unfortunately we went down 12-10, which kept the dreaded Brox top of the league. I thought Jelly was a bit too up for it, and could have done with being a bit more relaxed, but hey, what do I know?

So the end of the 1st half and not too bad a position to be in. As long as we can beat Lee next time, we should have a good chance of making the play-offs again, and who knows what might happen this time?

Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone, and all of us down here on the Southern Riviera send our best wishes to all Squashers everywhere (even Ian Robinson!)
