INSIDE ROUND ONE
Brian Hargrave previews the first clashes of the new season - Tues 5th Oct ...
nl preview1
In round
one there should be a full house for the West Midlands Derby with
Wolverhampton entertaining last year's runners-up Edgbaston Priory.
The expected line ups are
Wolverhampton
Edgbaston
Anthony Ricketts (WR 13) v David Palmer (WR4)
Scott Handley (WR 67) v Adrian
Grant (WR 16)
Mark
Cairns
v Peter Barker (WR 36)
Liam Kenny (WR 69) v Hadrian
Stiff (Eng 17)
Shelley Kitchen (WR 14) v Rachel Willmott
On the basis of world rankings, Edgbaston has the edge. Much will
depend on how fully Anthony Ricketts
has recovered from injury and he will need to be back at his best to
beat David Palmer. The other men's
ties could all go either way. Top England Junior Rachel Willmot makes her debut forvEdgbaston following the late withdrawl of french No 1 Isabelle Stoehr .
The outcome could well be decided by the encounter involving the
experienced Mark Cairns,
National 035 Champion, and one of the best young players Peter Barker. Cairns only came
back from honeymoon on Monday but promised Manager Stephen Russell he would train every
day during his enforced absence.
Wolverhampton are renowned for ties ending 3-2 all too often in favour
of the opposition. Perhaps this season the outcome will swing Stephen
Russell’s way.
It should also be a full house at Manchester, where champions Manchester-Pontefract are at full
strength against a weakened Nottingham
team who will miss the in form Simon Parke.
The expected line ups are:
Manchester
Nottingham
1 Lee Beachill (WR1) v John
White (WR 7)
2 James Willstrop
v David Evans
3 Marcus Berrett
v Alex Stait
4 Nick
Taylor
v Nick Douglas
5 Jenny
Duncalf
v Pam Nimmo
John White will
have a point to prove against the new world no 1 and he will be hoping
that the outcome of the tie is not a “whitewash” in favour of the
visitors who appear to have the edge all the way down the order.
In group B, Lee on Solent
take on Sue Wright's Oberthur Strings.
The home team will have a line up comprising of Lars Harms, Greg
Tippings( the Club’s new Professional), Ritwick
Battacharya, Shahid Khan and Tina Rix. The order from newcomers
Oberthur Strings is still awaited.
The other Group B tie sees Chichester
renew their old rivalry with UniSport
Guildford.
The eagerly awaited Sussex v Surrey encounter does suggest, on paper, a
home victory. Guildford manager Ian
Robinson will be looking for his team to get out of the blocks
much earlier this season team and to upset the form book. Ian’s short
journey back to his home in Sussex should mean that he gets his report
to Squashplayer before Peter Crabtree,
the man who has a way with words and a special style of his own.
The expected line ups are
Chichester
Guildford
Azzi Iskander (WR 29) v Stacey Ross (WR 65)
Peter Genever (WR 61) v Steve Meads
Ben Garner (WR 46) v Neil Frankland
Tim
Vail
v Jesse Engelbrecht
Linda Elriani (WR 6) v Fiona Geaves (WR 7)
Linda and Fiona are both representing England in the World team
championships this week but with world rankings so close both will have
a point or two to prove. My prediction 3-2 to …..
Sitting out round one are Benz Bavarian Duffield.
