THAT’S BETTER - NEARLY THERE
Chi’s recently humbled team trekked through the wilds of Oxfordshire to take on the hopefuls of Bicester, needing an emphatic win to give them a degree of comfort in the battle for the play-off places. Sue Wright’s youngsters have struggled so far, and we hoped that if we got a 5-0 win again, then we only had to beat Lee next match to be sure of a play-off place for the 2nd year running.
Linda Charman carried on from where she left at the weekend when she beat SWSA coach Jenny Tranfield in the Edinburgh final. This time she demolished one of her pupils, Katie Hill, without dropping a point. The courts were hot, and Linda just played the basics well and never allowed her opponent a chance. Meanwhile Tom Richards was facing a tough opponent in David Naish, only a couple of places below him in the under 19 rankings. Again, the hot court played its part, and in a bit of a hacking match, Tom slipped 2-1 behind before really getting the measure of the court, and his opponent, but ran out a 3-2 winner fairly comfortably in the end.
Newly appointed Head Coach at Chichester, Tim Vail was out to prove his worth against ex World 35 Chris Clare, now an accountant. In a match where both players favour the flamboyant rather than the physical, the nick was soon bruised from a relentless onslaught. Vail, however, showed the effects of his new training regime on the local sands, and after just 19 minutes eased to a 3-1 win after a lapse of concentration in the 3rd. On the adjacent court, Tom Richards was just starting his 5th game!
With the match secured, the push for the white-wash was now on, and Ben Garner had too much quality and strength for Clive Ewins, dropping only 8 points. Peter Genever then had the task of finishing off the match in style against Scott Handley. Tired from some tough matches in Edinburgh, and then a tremendous match with Dan Jenson in Super League the night before, Jelly struggled in the first 2, winning both 14-12 before nodding off in the 3rd. The 4th was a comfortable 9-3 to Jelly to wrap up the 5-0 needed.
The 7 points mean that Chi now only need to beat Lee to be sure of a play-off berth, and can then enjoy the Broxbourne match, and maybe turn them over once more – that would be nice!
