ENGLAND CRUISE TO
20th TEAM TITLE
Top seeds England crushed second seeds France in the final of the European
Junior (U19) Team Squash Championships to claim their 20th successive
victory in the event in Herentals, Belgium.
After dropping their first match in the tournament against hosts Belgium in
the semi-finals, England were in blistering form against their cross-Channel
neighbours, winning 3-0 for the loss of only 17 points in three matches.
It was 'ladies first' as Emma Beddoes, runner-up in the individual event
last week, took on France's Maud Duplomb in the opening match of the tie.
After her comfortable 9-3 9-2 9-0 victory, Beddoes' team-mate Laurence
Delasaux, winner of the men's individual title, maintained his unbeaten
record over the two events in Belgium to topple the French No1 Yann Perrin
9-2 9-2 9-3.
With the historic 20th title already won, England's second string Chris
Simpson made it a 3-0 win by defeating France's surprise individual
runner-up Mathieu Castagnet 9-2 9-3 in the best of three encounter.
Hosts Belgium, the fourth seeds, lost 1/2 to third seeds Germany in the
play-off for third place - but Belgian star Charlie De Rycke, the women's
individual champion, kept her unbeaten record over the week with a 9-4 9-0
9-0 win over Germany's Sandra Krüger.

French Junior Open
Moros Avenges 2003 Loss
Spain's
Margaux Moros made up for the disappointment of losing out in last year's
event by winning the women's U-19 title in the 2004 French Junior Open
Squash Championships in Marseille.
Top seed for the second year in a row, Moros dropped her only game of the
tournament in the final as she fought back from a game behind to beat
seventh-seeded Scot Lauren Gray 1-9 9-4 9-4 9-3 to lift the title.
Gray, a quarter-finalist in 2003, had reached the final after a shock
quarter-final upset over local favourite Celia Allamargot, the No2 seed.
The top seeds in the men's event made early exits. Malaysian favourite Wong
Kim Lee was taken out in four games in the first round by unseeded Jens
Schoor. The German went on to lose in five games in the quarter-finals to
ninth-seeded Egyptian Mahmoud Adel - but it was his unseeded compatriot
Tarek Nomen who starred in the event after removing France's second seed
Yann Perrin in the
last eight.
Nomen progressed to the final where he despatched Hong Kong's fourth seed
Dick Lau 9-6 9-3 9-2 to become the unexpected winner of the trophy.

Dutch Treble for Tommy
"I managed to win my third national title yesterday after a
long match with Laurens Jan Anjema," says Tommy Berden on his
website.
"Although I did win 3-0, the match lasted a bit longer than one and a half
hours. The Frans Otten Stadion was packed with more than 1000 spectators and
that made the centre court very very hot."

Inaugural European
Nations Cup Underway In Slovakia
The inaugural European Nations Cup, a new
initiative inspired by the European Squash Federation, gets underway this
weekend in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The team event is restricted to small and developing squash nations that
have yet to play in the European Team Championships or whose men have yet to
be ranked in the top 16 or women outside the top 12 in Europe in the last
five years.
"The European Nations Cup was introduced at the last ESF AGM," explained ESF
President Chris Stahl. "There will be men's teams of three and women's of
two, to try and encourage participation and keep costs down."
National teams have entered from Croatia, Estonia, Gibraltar, Isle of Man,
Poland, Russia and Slovakia, plus women's teams from the Czech Republic and
Hungary. In addition "guest" teams have been introduced to make the draw up
to 12 men's teams and six women's teams. "They will enjoy the competition
but are not eligible to win the trophies presented by Joyce Buckley, a
former President of the ESF," said Stahl.
"In addition, there are individual events which are unofficial and
introduced as a warm up for teams that arrive early and for individuals who
do not have teams, such as Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine," Stahl added.
"A lot of squash will be played, much networking will take place, and
sessions are planned on refereeing and marketing of the game. This should be
a big boost for squash and an encouragement for the development of the game
in countries where squash is a new sport," concluded Stahl.

Isle of Man head for Bratislava
from Isle of Man online
THE Isle of Man national squash team will be competing in Bratislava, the
capital of Slovakia, at the end of November in the European Nations Cup.
This new competition has been designed
to offer developing countries and small nations a chance to compete at their
own level.
The event has invited the participation of 15 other countries including
Croatia, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Israel, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Norway, Iceland,
Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Russia.
Some of the recently formed Eastern European countries have only started to
develop squash over the past few years but already they are rapidly
improving.
The Island has competed against some of these countries before, as recently
as May this year when the IoM team defeated Russia - some feat considering
the resources available to a country whose population is over 140 million.
The Island will be hoping to emulate this success as it is planning to send
its strongest team.
The future of local squash appears promising as more than 100 juniors
recently participated in National Squash Week held at the National Sports
Centre.
This enthusiasm is extremely important for the future of the sport as it can
only assist with the development of squash in the Island. It is hoped that
some up-and-coming junior players will be able to represent the IoM at some
off-Island competitions.
The IoM Squash Rackets Association will be looking at ways that this could
be developed when they meet with other officials at this year's event. The
Island will be looking to host the European Nations Cup within the next two
years. |

Squash World Mourns Oluf Jorgensen
Oluf Jorgensen, the former President of the Danish
Squash Association, died on Thursday 8th May in
hospital in Nottingham, England, where he had been
admitted during his presence at the European Team Championships. His
untimely death came only two months after his 60th birthday.
"For more than 20 years Oluf was synonymous with Danish Squash, most of the
time as President of the national federation. The development and interest
in squash in Denmark over the past 10-15 years can largely be attributed to
his enthusiasm and drive," said Tom Kjaerbye Larsen, President of the Danish
Squash Federation.
"Concerning the international sphere, Mr Jorgensen has through many years
taken a very active part and he is very well known in many countries as a
reputable man with excellent leadership qualities and an outstanding
personality," added Larsen.
Oluf Jorgensen was honoured with a number of national prizes for his
contribution to sport. He received the highest award from Danmarks
Idrćts-Forbund, the Danish Federation of Sport. At the annual meeting of the
Danish Squash Association just a few weeks ago, where he retired as
President, Oluf Jorgensen was appointed as the first honorary member of the
association.
"With Oluf's death we lost a close friend and a forceful personality who
liked to fight against any challenge. At this last challenge however - a
malignant tumour - he had to acknowledge that he was not able to win," said
Larsen. "This sad incident leaves a void to all involved in squash which of
course is nothing compared to his wife and children who - regardless of his
busy job - always had the highest priority.
"Oluf will always be in our hearts and memory. Right now our warmest
thoughts are with his beloved family."
Joyce Buckley, Vice President of the World Squash Federation and a former
President of the European Squash Federation, added: "Oluf was not only the
man who put Odense on the world squash map but he was also never afraid to
put his hand up to host international events - from European AGMs and
meetings to events like last year's highly successful Women's World Team
Championships. He was a great man and will be sorely missed by everyone
involved in the sport."

ESF Welcomes
Latvia As 40th Member
More than 25 member nations were represented at the 2003 AGM of the European
Squash Federation (ESF), at which Latvia was welcomed as the Federation's
40th member.
The well-attended AGM was held in Nottingham, in conjunction with the ESF
Team Championships. The occasion also coincided with a meeting of the World
Squash Federation (WSF) Management Board, who were also present together
with observers from various member nations and representatives from the
Women's International Squash Players' Association (WISPA) and Professional
Squash Association (PSA).
ESF President Chris Stahl was re-elected unopposed for his second term of
office. Vice President Deirbhile O'Byrne was also elected unopposed for her
third term of office, whilst England's Martin Wren, who was co-opted to the
Management Board at last year's AGM, was elected Vice President.
Denmark's Oluf Jorgensen, who died days after the meeting, had also been
nominated for the position of Vice President but had withdrawn his
nomination prior to the meeting due to his illness.
Chris Stahl said that he was particularly pleased with the decision of the
meeting to establish a working party to decide on eligibility rules and a
format for a Nations Cup, to be held annually for small and developing
squash nations in Europe. The ESF sees this as a way to
encourage competition amongst these nations. This will be a low cost
event and will cater for teams whose standard is below that of the European
Team Championships. The working party will be chaired by Rusty Koys of
Slovakia and will report back to next year's AGM with their recommendations.
As a cost-saving exercise, the meeting also voted to cease production of the
Annual Handbook as all the relevant information will shortly be available on
the ESF Website. |
