ENGLAND RETAIN EURO TEAM TITLE
Top seeds England beat second seeds Netherlands 2/1 in a dramatic
final of the 2003 European Junior Team
Squash Championships in Parsdorf, Germany, to secure
the title for the 19th successive year.
It was a brave performance by the England team, all of whom were making
their first appearances in the prestigious
European U19 competition. First in action
was Suzie Pierrepont, the newly-crowned women's European individual
champion, who soon found herself 2/1 down to Netherlands opponent Orla
Noom, a beaten quarter-finalist in the individual event. The 18-year-old
from Sussex maintained her composure, however, to win 9-4 6-9 2-9 9-1 9-3
in 46 minutes to put England ahead.
The next match was a repeat of the men's individual final, with England's
Laurence Delasaux looking to avenge his five-game defeat to Dutchman Dylan
Bennett. At 2/0 up, the 17-year-old from Hull's plans seemed on course,
but Bennett fought back and after 62 gruelling and nail-biting minutes
secured a 6-9 6-9 9-7 9-0 9-7 victory to level the tie.
The fate of the title was now in the hands of Dutchman Tom
Hoevenaars, and Chris Simpson, the 16-year-old British U17 champion
from Guernsey who lost in the second round of the individual event. Playing in his first ever 'live' rubber, Simpson impressively dismissed
his opponent 9-7 9-0 9-2 in 40 minutes
to clinch the title for England in their 20th successive final.
"It was a fantastic final with everybody in the team playing their hearts
out," said England's co-manager and coach Annette Pilling. "The fact that
none of our squad had ever played in this event before speaks volumes for
their strength and determination - and it's great to know that all but one
of our squad will also be available for us next year, with Tom Richards
and Chris Simpson eligible for a further two years. This year's has been
one of the best events I've been involved with - with every member of our
squad playing a significant part," Pilling added.
Fourth seeds Wales beat France 2/1 in the play-off for third place, while
third-seeded hosts Germany avenged their earlier defeat by Belgium to beat
the sixth seeds 2/1 to win fifth place.

England & Netherlands In European Final
In a repeat of the 1998 final, top seeds and defending champions England
will face second seeds Netherlands in the final of the 2003 European
Junior Team Squash Championships after both claimed 2/1 victories in the
semi-finals in Parsdorf, Germany.
England, unbeaten in the finals since the first year of the competition in
1984, were made to fight all the way by unexpected semi-finalists France,
the fifth seeds. Laurence Delasaux, the England No1 junior who was
runner-up in the individual competition, needed five games to overcome
France's Yann Perrin, whom he beat in straight games in the earlier
event's semi-finals.
After the Humberside teenager clambered to his 7-9 9-6 9-3 8-10 9-7 win,
team-mate Suzie Pierrepont, fresh from winning the women's individual
title, secured England's place in their 20th successive final with a 9-6
9-1 9-1 win over Maud Duplomb. France claimed a consolation point in the
dead rubber when Johann Bouquet fought back from a game down to defeat Tom
Richards 6-9 9-0 9-0 in the best-of-three match.
Newly-crowned men's European champion Dylan Bennett steered Netherlands to
only their second ever appearance in the final by beating Wales No1 Rob
Sutherland 9-6 9-1 4-9 9-7 in the opening match. Orla Noom clinched
victory with a 9-0 9-4 9-0 win over Wales' Stacey Preece before Jethro
Binns restored Welsh pride with a 9-3 9-0 win over Tom Hoevenaars in the
third string encounter.

Hosts Germany In Early European
Junior Championships Upset
While top seeds England and the Netherlands opened their accounts with
victories on the first day of qualifying matches in the European Junior
Team Squash Championships in Parsdorf, third-seeded hosts Germany stumbled
to a 2-1 loss to sixth seeds Belgium.
Favourites England, the title-holders, beat 8th seeds Scotland 3-0 in Pool
A, though No2 seeds Netherlands only managed a 2-1 win over Denmark, the
seventh seeds, in Pool B.
Belgium's unexpected victory over Germany followed a 2-1 win over 14th

TOP SEEDS CLAIM EURO U19 TITLES ...
JUST
Top seeds Dylan Bennett and Suzie Pierrepont won the
men's and women's titles, respectively, in the European Junior Squash
Championships in Parsdorf, Germany - but both had to come from behind and
were then taken the full distance by their second-seeded opponents.
Bennett, 18, from Eindhoven, beat England's Laurence Delasaux 5-9 9-0 9-1
7-9 9-2 to become the first Dutchman to lift the title since Tommy Berden
in 1998. The success marks Bennett's eighth junior title in Europe this
season.
The women's final was a seesaw affair in which Spain's Margaux Moros, the
17-year-old from Valencia who was given a walkover through to the final,
led 1/0 and 2/1 in games - and then raced to matchball at 8-2 in the
fifth.
Pierrepont maintained her composure and climbed back to eight-all - saving
a further matchball on the way before taking the final two points to claim
the title with a 7-9 9-2 1-9 9-4 10-8 scoreline. The 18-year-old
favourite from Brighton becomes the 11th English winner of the title,
joining a distinguished group of former champions including world No4
Tania Bailey and former world champion and world No1 Cassie Jackman.
