Whitlock Provides Long-Awaited Home British Junior Open Win
England's
Emily Whitlock survived the longest final in the Tecnifibre British
Junior Open Squash Championships in Sheffield to become the first
home winner in the prestigious European Squash Federation Junior Circuit
event for almost a decade.
The
16-year-old from Colwyn Bay in North Wales was the second seed in the Women's
U17 championship - and reached the final without dropping a game. Her
surprise opponent in the final was Yathreb Adel, a 3/4 seed who upset
favourite and fellow Egyptian Kanzy Emad El-Defrawy in an 81-minute
semi-final marathon.
Whitlock
(right), the
reigning British U17 National champion and daughter of former England
international Philip Whitlock, twice had to come back from behind before
finally overcoming 14-year-old Adel 8-11, 11-1, 4-11, 11-8, 11-6 in 50 minutes
to record her historic victory.
The triumph
marks the first English British Junior Open title success since James
Willstrop won the U19 crown - the Yorkshireman's third Sheffield title - in
2002.
After Egypt
made history in 2010 by winning all eight titles on offer for the first time,
the nation was reduced to just six successes this year. Ali Farag caused
the downfall of one of two world champions in Sheffield when he upset fellow
Egyptian Amr Khaled Khalifa, the top seed, 11-7, 11-4, 11-6 in the
Men's U19 final.
It was sweet
revenge for the 18-year-old from Cairo who lost to Khalifa in the World
Junior Championship final in Ecuador in August last year.
Amanda
Sobhy,
the Women's World Junior Champion from the USA, coasted through to the other U19
final without dropping a game. The top seed's opponent was Egyptian rival
Nour El Tayeb, the No2 seed who lost to Sobhy in June's world final in
Germany.
But it was El
Tayeb who edged to victory, recording her fourth successive Sheffield win over
the 17-year-old from New York 11-6, 12-10, 11-7 in just 28 minutes. The triumph
marks 17-year-old El Tayeb's fifth British Junior Open title since 2005 - and
completes her set of U13, U15, U17 and U19 trophies.
The Men's
U17 final was one of four all-Egyptian climaxes at the Abbeydale Park
club in Sheffield. Mazan Gamal, a 3/4 seed who made his breakthrough
after beating England's No2 seed Ollie Holland in the semi-finals, went
on to defeat 5/8 seed Moustafa Bayoumy 11-8, 11-9, 11-7 in the final to
secure his first British Junior Open title.
Remarkably,
Mohamed Hossam El Gawarhy became the only favourite to claim a title when he
beat Egyptian compatriot Youssef Aboul Makarim, the No2 seed, 11-4, 11-8,
11-5 in the Men's U15 final.
The women's
final also saw two Egyptians battle for supremacy - second seed Salma Hani
emerging victorious with an 11-6, 11-4, 9-11, 6-11, 11-5 win over 3/4 seed
Laila Omar.
Eain Yow Ng
produced an expected Malaysian title success - and reduced the Egyptian
stranglehold - in the Men's U13 event. The 3/4 seed had to fight back
from 2/1 down to topple Egyptian favourite Saad El Din Ihab 11-7, 8-11,
10-12, 11-5, 11-4 in 48 minutes to make his mark on the international stage.
Egypt's
Habiba Mohamed denied a Malaysian double in the Women's U13 final
when she beat fellow 5/8 seed Andrea Lee 11-3, 11-8, 12-10 in just 22
minutes.
