Fitz-Gerald & White Win
Victorian Open Titles
Australia's retired record five-times world champion Sarah Fitz-Gerald
powerfully demonstrated that she is still a major force to be
reckoned with when she swept through the field of the Parkview Motor
Inn Victorian Open as a qualifier - and clinched the trophy for a
fifth time when she defeated eighth seed Louise Crome in straight
games in today's women's final in Wangaratta, Australia
Although suffering from a kidney infection, Fitz-Gerald was still
able to overcome the tenacity and spirit of the 26-year-old New
Zealander 9-1 9-4 9-5 in 37 minutes - after despatching the
top-seeded Australian Dianne Desira, also in straight games, earlier
in the day in the semi-finals.
"Louise seems to have improved over the past month in her bid to be
selected in the national team for the Women's Team Championship in
Holland," said Fitz-Gerald after taking her haul of WISPA World Tour
titles to 63!
In the men's championship, 27-year-old Victorian Cameron White
earned his sixth PSA Tour title and his third Victorian Open crown
when he defeated second-seeded compatriot Raj Nanda 9-15 15-8 15-7
15-3 in 68 minutes.
Both players thrilled the capacity crowd with a superb exhibition of
agility and stroke making, but it was the younger Nanda who finally
succumbed to enormous pressure placed upon him by his fellow
Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship holder.
"White's victory, which followed a four-game win over New Zealander
Callum O'Brien in the semi-finals, has also kept him in contention
for a berth in the national team for the 2006 Commonwealth Games to
be held in his home town Melbourne," said a Victorian Open
spokesperson.

21-Aug:
Fitz-Gerald On Track
For Fifth Home Town Title
Despite feeling off-colour, Australia's five times world champion
Sarah Fitz-Gerald took out two seeds on day two of the Parkview
Motor Inn Victorian Open Squash Championships in Wangaratta,
Australia, and now meets top seed and 2001/02 champion Dianne
Desira in Sunday's semi final.
The retired Fitz-Gerald, who had to enter the event as a qualifier,
accounted for fifth-seeded New Zealander Judith Casbolt and fellow
Aussie Kasey Brown, the third seed, in straight games. Desira, who
like Fitz-Gerald also hails from Melbourne, overpowered Japanese
qualifier Mami Nishio and seventh seed Danielle Davis - also without
dropping a game.
The bottom half of the women's draw was highlighted by the shock
departure of second-seeded Dutch player Karen Kronemeyer, who was
ousted by Aisling Blake. The sixth seed from Ireland will now
meet eighth-seeded New Zealander Louise Crome, who dispensed
with fellow New Zealander Jaclyn Hawkes, the fourth seed, 9-7 9-7
9-4.
All four top seeds advanced to the semi finals of the men's
championship, with top seed Cameron White striving to obtain
a third home town title. White's semi-final opponent will be
third-seeded New Zealander Kashif Shuja, who outlasted
talented AIS scholarship holder Aaron Frankcomb in four enthralling
games.
The second semi-final will see fourth-seeded New Zealander Callum
O'Brien pitted against 2000 title holder Raj Nanda, the
second seed who overcame a tenacious fellow Aussie Simon Carruthers
15-12 15-10 15-11.
20-Aug:
Steward Set To Emulate Father,
Fitz-Gerald Stages Comeback
The opening day's action in the Parkview Motor Inn Victorian Open
Squash Championships in Wangaratta, Australia, produced a
significant upset in the men's event and a return to WISPA World
Tour action for the retired five-times world champion Sarah Fitz-Gerald
in the women's.
For only the fourth time in her illustrious career, Fitz-Gerald
competed in the qualification rounds to qualify for a world tour
main draw. The former world No1 did so with ease, beating Malaysia's
Sally Looi 9-5 9-2 9-1 to earn a place in the first round against
New Zealand's fifth seed Judith Casbolt.
Melbourne-based Fitz-Gerald, who boasts 62 WISPA titles, is seeking
her fifth 'home town' crown.
The first round of the men's event was highlighted by the victory of
Australian 15 Year Champion Tom Steward, who defeated 15th
seed Takehide Hota, from Japan, 15-11 15-7 15-9 in 41 minutes.
Coincidentally, Steward's father Len won this title in 1978.
Steward's next opponent is third-seeded New Zealander Kashif Shuja,
who overcame stubborn resistance from Irish youngster Niall Rooney
before winning 15-10 15-11 17-14.
