Alarcon Sneaks Third Title In A Row In Losone

Brazil's Rafael F Alarcon collected his third PSA Tour title in a row after a dramatic five-game victory over Frenchman Laurent Elriani in the final of the Losone Swiss Squash Classic in Switzerland.

Elriani, competing in his first PSA final for almost six years, started well and opened up a one-game advantage.  The momentum swung between the two players for the next three games until the score stood at two-games all.

The fifth game decider produced the best squash of the match, with the 29-year-old Brazilian taking an early lead, then Elriani hitting back with positive attacking play to reach 10-9 match ball.  Alarcon, however, showed once again why he is so good in close finishes – and held strong to win the tie-break 3/1 to secure the match 9-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-5, 11-10 (3-1) in 70 minutes.

It was the fifth title of Alarcon's career, but the first gained outside South America.  In addition to the trophy and valuable ranking points that he will earn, Alarcon was also presented with a watch to the value of 1,700USD, which was kindly sponsored by the company 'George J Von Burg'.

Rafael Rallies To Birthday Win In Losone

Rafael F Alarcon celebrated his 29th birthday in appropriate style by battling through to his eighth PSA Tour final in the Losone Swiss Squash Classic in Switzerland.

But the second seed from Brazil was taken the full distance by Egypt's Omar Mosaad before beating the fifth seed 6-11, 11-5, 10-11 (2-4), 11-10 (4-2), 11-10 (2-0) in a 95-minute semi-final marathon – after saving three match balls in the fourth game.

Mosaad, 18, from Cairo, had reached the semi-finals after upsetting his third-seeded compatriot Amr Mansi in the quarter-finals.

New Zealand's Kashif Shuja caused the biggest upset in the quarter-finals when he defeated top-seeded Welshman Gavin Jones. But the Pakistan-born seventh seed met his match in the semi-finals when he went down 11-7, 3-11, 11-2, 11-8 to France's No4 seed Laurent Elriani.

Elriani, 29 and based in England, is celebrating his first PSA Tour final appearance since reaching the climax of the Exterieur Open in his home country in August 2000

Swelim Swoops To Swiss Upset

Egyptian qualifier Amr Ramzy Swelim caused the biggest upset on the opening day's play in the Losone Swiss Squash Classic when he beat Czech number one Jan Koukal in Losone, Switzerland.

Two games behind and 2-6 down in the third game, the 21-year-old from Cairo bravely fought back to defeat sixth seed Koukal 10-11 (1-3), 7-11, 11-10 (2-0), 11-2, 11-8 in 58 minutes.

Swelim now faces Laurent Elriani after the fourth-seeded Frenchman beat Italy's Luca Mastrostefano 11-5, 10-11 (0-2), 11-4, 9-11, 11-1.

Local players Andre Holderegger and Nicolas Mueller both lost in four games. Egypt's No8 seed Sherif Moustafa Kamel beat Holderegger 11-8, 10-11 (0-2), 11-6, 11-8, while 16-year-old Mueller took a game from second seed Rafael F Alarcon before the Brazilian dug deep to record an 11-9, 10-11 (1-3), 11-5, 11-5 victory in 40 minutes.
