Fifth
For Frost In Ponta Grossa
Danish
squash star Kristian Frost Olesen claimed his fifth PSA World
Tour title of the year when he beat local hero Rafael Alarcon
in the final of the Ponta Lagoa Internacional Challenger in
Brazil.
After
taking a two-game lead and going ahead 4-1 in the third game of the
PSA Challenger 10 event at Clube Ponta Lagoa in Ponta
Grossa, Olesen saw fourth seed Alarcon fight back to draw level -
before the players shared the lead, point by point, until eleven-all.
"But
then, to the frustration of the public that sold out the seats of Ponta
Lagoa, Kristian won the match," explained event promoter Alexandre
Bulyk.
Olesen's 11-7, 11-5, 13-11 victory after 78 minutes marks the Dane's
fifth Tour title of the year, and the seventh of his career.

Hero Alarcon Ousts Favourite Lee
Brazilian number one Rafael Alarcon delighted the partisan crowd
at the Ponta Lagoa Internacional Challenger when he overcame
event favourite Joe Lee in an 86-minute semi-final marathon in
the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash event at Clube Ponta
Lagoa in Ponta Grossa, Brazil.
The
No4 seed from Sao Paulo came back from two-games-to-one down - and from
4-7 behind in the fourth - to beat Englishman Lee 11-9, 4-11, 9-11,
11-9, 11-6.
"It
was a fantastic match with unbelievable recovering by Rafa," said event
promoter Alexandre Bulyk.
The
win takes 35-year-old Alarcon, ranked 82 in the world, into the 30th PSA
Tour final of his career. The success also means that the Brazilian star
has made the final in all three of his PSA Tour event appearances this
year!
Much
will ride on the final in which Alarcon faces Kristian Frost Olesen,
the second seed from Denmark who will be celebrating his fifth Tour
final this year - with title triumphs in all the previous four!
The
23-year-old from Odense ended North American interest in Ponta Grossa
when he beat US number two Christopher Gordon, the third seed,
11-6, 11-5, 11-4.
Gordon
Keeps US Hopes Alive In Brazil
Keeping North American interest alive in the Ponta Lagoa
Internacional Challenger in Brazil, US number two Christopher
Gordon battled for just under an hour to claim a place in the
semi-finals of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash event at
Clube Ponta Lagoa in Ponta Grossa.
In a
clash described by event promoter Alexandre Bulyk as "the best
match of night", third seed Gordon defeated Brazilian qualifier
Vinicius Costa 11-7, 11-5, 7-11, 12-10 to set up the anticipated
semi-final meeting with No2 seed Kristian Frost Olesen.
Dane
Olesen also had to overcome local opposition, fighting back from a game
down to beat Brazilian Vinicius Rodrigues 4-11, 11-5, 11-8,
13-11.
There
will be Brazilian interest in the other semi-final, however, where the
country's top-ranked player Rafael Alarcon will face Joe Lee,
the top seed from England.
Alarcon, the No3 seed from Sao Paulo, despatched Englishman Alex
Ingham 11-3, 11-9, 12-10 while Lee, playing his opening match in the
event after receiving a bye in the first round, defeated Argentina's
Hernan D'Arcangelo 11-5, 11-6, 12-10.
Alarcon Leads The Way In Ponta Grossa
Rafael Alarcon
led a trio of home players through to the quarter-finals of the Ponta
Grossa Open after a straight games win over Joe Chapman of
the British Virgin Islands in the opening round of the PSA World Tour
Challenger 10 squash event at Clube Ponta Lagoa in Ponta
Grossa, Brazil.
Fourth
seed Alarcon, the 36-year-old Brazilian number one, despatched Chapman
11-7, 11-9, 13-11 in 43 minutes and will now play England's Alex
Ingham for a place in the last four.
Ingham,
a 22-year-old from Surrey, survived the longest match of the day when he
beat Pakistan's Karamatullah Khan 11-4, 6-11, 11-4, 12-10 in 56
minutes.
England's Joe Lee is seeded to win the title. But the London-born
world No55 was handed a bye in the opening round - and now meets
Hernan D'Arcangelo, an Argentinean who also rested on the opening
day when his Brazilian opponent Ronivaldo Duarte was forced to
withdraw after sustaining a wrist injury just minutes before the match.
Local
qualifier Vinicius Costa claimed an unexpected place in the
quarter-finals when he upset fellow Brazilian Josimar Silva 11-8,
11-8, 11-2.
The
28-year-old from Caxias Do Sul will now face third seed Christopher
Gordon, the US number two who defeated Brazil's Manoel Pereira
11-7, 11-1, 11-6.
