PYRAMIDES OPEN 2012

Qualifier Waters Tops The Pyramides

Qualifier Waters Tops The Pyramides

Alison Waters
won her fourth title of 2012 after defeating a number of seeded opponents in the WSA Silver $35K International Des Pyramides Open in Paris, France.

Forced to spend much of 2011 recuperating from injury, the Englishwoman slipped down the rankings but has made excellent progress upon her return, and has since doubled her WSA World Tour title tally since falling injured.

Her ranking meant that the former world No3 had to qualify for the main draw, and she duly defeated Julia Lecoq and Emily Whitlock in the preliminaries before taking down No8 seed Donna Urquhart in round one.

The first round held a number of surprise results as Waters’ fellow qualifier Aisling Blake came from two games down to beat No3 seed Rachael Grinham.  Unseeded Omneya Abdel Kawy of Egypt also defeated No6 Samantha Teran of Mexico.

Kawy continued her good form in the quarter-finals as the former world No4 defeated experienced professional Natalie Grinham, whilst Waters battled to a 73-minute five-game win against top seed Madeline Perry.

Perry’s Irish teammate Blake exited the competition at the hand of Malaysian Low Wee Wern and No5 seed Camille Serme, playing in front of a home crowd, dispatched second seed Kasey Brown.

Wee Wern proved too good on semi-finals day, and hopes of a local win were dashed as the No7 seed beat Camille Serme in straight games.  Waters continued her run, beating Kawy to ensure her fourth WSA World Tour final in five competitions.

Waters showed a slight edge against Wee Wern to take a narrow first game of the final, and there continued to be little separating the pair as the scores remained close throughout the entirety of the second.

The Malaysian refused to let Waters capitalise on game-ball at 10-9, and displayed a determined resoluteness to stick in the contest and was rewarded with a 14-12 win. The Englishwoman began to assert more authority on the match and took a number of consecutive points in the third to establish a lead that Wee Wern was unable to catch.

The 21-year-old was playing catch-up for the rest of the contest as Waters pushed ahead and the Malaysian was left to pick up points where she could.  After 70-minutes of play, exactly the same time when the pair faced each other in the British Open first round in May, Waters completed her win to gain her 8th WSA World Tour title.
