Perry Claims Ile-Rousse Crown In Corsica
Sarah-Jane Perry won her second ever WSA
World Tour title after a dominant campaign in Corsica.
The 22-year-old faced Frenchwoman Laura Pompartes in the $5K
Ile-Rousse International final, having made quick work of Belen
Etchechoury of Argentina, Sally Skaarenborg of Denmark and
No3 seed Maud Duplomb of France.
Another potential upset was on the cards for the final, as No6 seed
Pomportes had already claimed a surprise 3-1 win over the tournament’s
top seed Birgit Coufal of Austria in the quarter-finals. The
home hope had also seen away unseeded Noelie Marchetti and
surprise semi-final contender, fifteen-year-old Egyptian qualifier Nadine
Ayman Mohamed Shahin.
After quickly moving through from qualifying, Shahin upset no4 seed Lotte
Erkisen in round one, as well as no7 seed Chloe Mesic in the
quarters, but ran out of steam against the world No74 from Toulouse.
Pomportes, starring in her first ever WSA World Tour final, showed
little sign of nerves as she troubled Perry early on, as she did not
allow the No2 seed to settle. Perry’s movement improved as the contest
progressed, and the Englishwoman closed out a narrow tie-break first
game 13-11.
Confident and patient retrieving from Perry saw her extend her lead in
the second game, happy to let the rallies play out and waiting
intelligently for the opportunity to attack.
A questionable marking call in the third game allowed Pomportes a way
back into the contest, as Perry conceded afterwards that the refereeing
decisions had made her lose concentration, and the Frenchwoman pulled a
game back.
Refocused however, Perry made quick work of the fourth game to end the
competition and double her WSA World Tour title tally. Speaking
afterwards, Perry said: “Obviously I’m pleased to win my 2nd title
today. It’s been a great week overall and I’m now going to have a rest
before getting a good summer’s worth of training in. Coming back
stronger and fitter for the new season!”
