RESULTS: PSA Challenger 10 Cerdil Open, Dourados, Brazil

Koukal Gets Revenge In Dourados

Just a week after losing to the Brazilian in the final of the Paraguay Open, Czech squash star Jan Koukal gained his revenge by beating home hero Rafael Alarcon in four games in the final of the Cerdil Open, the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 event in its third year at the Shopping Avenida Center in Dourados, Brazil.

Both had survived tough semi-finals - top seed Koukal ending the impressive run of unseeded New Zealander Evan Williams in four games to reach his third successive Cerdil final, but third seed Alarcon battling for more than an hour to upset second-seeded Egyptian Andrew Wagih Shoukry 3-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-5, 11-9.

It was Alarcon, the world No79 from Sao Paulo, who took the early lead in the final, however.

But Koukal, who went down to the top-ranked Brazilian in straight games in the Paraguayan capital Asuncion, reclaimed the advantage to close out the match 9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-9 after 50 minutes.

The win marks the 28-year-old from Prague's 21st PSA World Tour title.

Rafa On Course In Dourados

Top-ranked Brazilian Rafael Alarcon extended home interest in the Cerdil Open into the semi-finals when he beat Argentinean Hernan D'Arcangelo in the quarter-finals of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash event in its third year at the Shopping Avenida Center in Dourados.

Third seed Alarcon, the world No79 from Sao Paulo, fought back from a game down to beat D'Arcangelo 9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-5.

The 35-year-old Brazilian now faces Andrew Wagih Shoukry for a place in the final. The No2 seed from Egypt took just 25 minutes to see off Frenchman Fabien Verseille 11-5, 11-9, 11-1.

Unseeded New Zealander Evan Williams maintained his fine form in the event by overcoming Argentina's Gonzalo Miranda 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-4 in a 75-minutes marathon.

The 22-year-old from Wellington, ranked outside the world top 120, will now face top seed Jan Koukal. The Czech world No50, bidding for a place in the final for the third year in a row, prevailed 10-12, 11-4, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9 in 70 minutes over France's Joan Lezaud.

Kiwi Williams Downs Gordon In Dourados

Unheralded New Zealander Evan Williams caused the biggest first round upset in the Cerdil Open in Brazil when he despatched fourth seed Christopher Gordon to claim an unexpected place in the quarter-finals of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash event in its third year at the Shopping Avenida Center in Dourados.

The 22-year-old from Wellington, ranked outside the world top 120 and competing for the first time in Brazil, recovered from a game down to beat world No 70 Gordon, the US number two, 7-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-8 in 63 minutes.

Williams will now face Gonzalo Miranda after the Argentinean beat local hope Manoel Pereira, a qualifier from Sao Paulo in Brazil, 5-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-6 also in 63 minutes.

Brazilian interest in the event now rests solely with third seed Rafael Alarcon. Fresh from his title triumph in last week's Paraguay Open, world No79 from Sao Paulo took just 25 minutes to overcome English qualifier Luke Butterworth 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 and will now take on Argentina's Hernan D'Arcangelo for a place in the semi-finals.
