Adel Upsets Top Seed in
Mexico
Sixteen-year-old Yathreb Adel of Egypt stunned top seed
Aisling Blake to become the surprise winner of the first $10K
Mexico Open.
The competition, held in the nation’s capital Mexico City, was not short
of upsets from the early stages as Welsh qualifier Deon Saffery
beat No5 seed Olivia Blatchford in four games in round one. Last
week’s Internacional Sporta Open champion Nicolette Fernandes
then shocked promising English teenager and No2 seed Emily Whitlock
in a three game defeat in the quarter finals.
Adel took up Whitlock’s role as teenage sensation as she then defeated
Fernandes to book her place in the final, whilst Blake battled to
eventual victory after a long five-game encounter with No4 seed
Samantha Cornett of Canada.
The Egyptian made quick work of the first game against Blake, as the
Irishwoman struggled to get into the contest after her endurance effort
in the previous round. A much closer encounter then ensued, but it was
Adel who was able to apply the finishing touches, claiming two tie-break
wins to seal the teenager’s third WSA World Title.
