Cesar
Sinks Twin For Guatemala Glory
Just a
month after overtaking his twin brother in the PSA world rankings for
the first time, Cesar Salazar won the Internacional Sporta
Open title in Guatemala after recording his maiden Tour win over
Arturo Salazar in the final of the PSA World Tour Challenger 15
squash event in its fifth year at the Sporta club in Guatemala
City.
Third
seed Cesar, the 24-year-old world No55 from San Luis Potosi in Mexico,
reached his sixth Tour final after beating unseeded Welshman Peter
Creed in straight games - while Arturo, the No4 seed ranked just two
places below, made his breakthrough in the other semi by upsetting
second-seeded New Zealander Campbell Grayson in five
energy-sapping games.
Arturo
was celebrating his eighth appearance in a PSA final - and had only lost
one of his seven previous appearances.
He was
also the event's title-holder, having won the trophy for the second year
in a row twelve months ago.
But
Cesar was determined to prove the accuracy of the latest world rankings
- and despatched his sibling 11-4, 11-2, 11-4 to collect the second PSA
World Tour title of his career.
Creed
Crushes Knight In Guatemala
Unseeded Welshman Peter Creed pulled off the biggest upset on the
second day of action in the Internacional Sporta Open when he
defeated top seed Martin Knight to reach the semi-finals of the
PSA World Tour Challenger 15 squash event in its fifth year at
the Sporta club in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Creed,
the 25-year-old Welsh champion from Caerphilly, overcame New Zealander
Knight 11-7, 11-5, 11-9 and will now face Mexican Cesar Salazar
for a place in the final.
"Smiles with a 3-0 win over Kiwi friend, Martin Knight (Wr 42),"
said Creed via Twitter. "Semi Final next against Cesar Salad here in
Guatemala."
Third
seed Salazar beat England's Jaymie Haycocks 11-8, 11-2, 11-9 -
and will join his twin brother in the semi-finals after fourth seed
Arturo Salazar recovered from 2/0 down to beat Mexican rival Eric
Galvez 6-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-6.
Seeds
Safely Through In Guatemala
New
Zealand favourite Martin Knight led all four seeds safely through
the first round of the Internacional Sporta Open, the PSA
World Tour Challenger 15 squash event in its fifth year at the
Sporta club in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
The
world No43 from Auckland beat English qualifier Nathan Lake 11-4,
11-4, 11-9 and will now face Peter Creed for a place in the
semi-finals.
Welsh
champion Creed is used to playing Kiwis after ousting New Zealand
qualifier Evan Williams 11-7, 5-11, 11-2, 11-4.
An
all-New Zealand final is predicted - and second seed Campbell Grayson,
also from Auckland, successfully made the last eight after beating
Mexico's Erik Tepos Valtierra 11-4, 11-3, 11-6.
