Chan Topples Grinham in Buler Challenge Cup

Joey Chan pulled off a famous home-victory in the Buler Squash Challenge Cup final last weekend, after beating number one seed Rachael Grinham in five games.

The top seeded players seemed to struggle early on in the WSA World Tour $15K event, as both eventual finalists were forced to four games in round one.  Former world no1 Grinham, defeated local qualifier Tong Tsz-Wing followed by Joshna Chinappa of India, whilst Chan bested Pansy Chan Pui-Hei and Coline Aumard en-route to the semi’s.

Local qualifier Ho Tze-Lok dismissed the challenges of third and seventh seeds Siyoli Walters and Olga Ertlova to set up an unlikely semi-final clash against the experienced Australian international, but was unable to continue her streak as Grinham took little over 20-minutes to book her final spot.

Chan then beat Malaysian fifth seed Siti Munirah Jusoh in straight-games to oppose Grinham in her 60th WSA World Tour final.

In a close, cat-and-mouse battle last 51-minutes, the young Hong Kong international closed out a gruelling 5-game win in front of her home crowd, making it her fifth WSA title in seven final appearances.

Both players will travel to London, England next month for the first British Open held since Grinham won the title back in 2009.
