Tuominen Takes Title No4 In Finland

Local hero Olli Tuominen claimed his fourth Savcor Finnish Open title in five years when he defeated third seed Karim Abdel Gawad in the final of the PSA World Tour Challenger 15 squash event at Shopping Center Stella in Mikkeli.

Top seed Tuominen reached the final - the 17th Tour final of his career - after overcoming unseeded New Zealander Campbell Grayson in the previous round.

It was in the other semi that third seed Gawad held off the challenge of unseeded fellow Egyptian Omar Abdel Meguid.

The Finn got off to a flying start in the final, and managed to keep the speed high. Gawad, the world No42, was unable to challenge Tuominen in the first two games.

In the third, however, the 20-year-old from Cairo got into the game and took control - ultimately winning the game to reduce the deficit.

Tuominen fought back in the fourth to grab an early 5-1 lead. Gawad came back once again - but the four-point cushion was enough for the world No23 from Helsinki to take the game and the match 11-5, 11-4, 5-11, 11-9 in just under one hour.

The triumph marks 32-year-old Tuominen's 11th PSA World Tour title.

Meguid Makes Finnish Quarters

Egypt's Omar Abdel Meguid caused the biggest upset on the opening day's play in the Savcor Finnish Open when he ousted second-seeded South African Stephen Coppinger in an 80-minute marathon in the PSA World Tour Challenger 15 squash event at Raviradantie in Mikkeli.

The 23-year-old from Giza battled from two games down to topple world No25 Coppinger 9-11, 12-14, 11-7, 11-8, 11-9.

The South African led 6-4 and 9-6 in the decider, but Meguid took five points in row to claim a place in the quarter finals.

Olli Tuominen led home interest with distinction - but the top seed from Helsinki dropped the first game before beating Czech champion Jan Koukal 8-11, 12-10, 12-10, 11-6.

The 32-year-old former world No13 wlll be joined in the last eight by Finnish number two Henrik Mustonen. The No4 seed was taken the full distance by Andrew Wagih Shoukry before overcoming the Egyptian 7-11, 11-7, 11-7, 12-14, 11-4 in 67 minutes.
