Koukal Reaps Resistancia Rewards

Czech champion Jan Koukal survived his second successive 75-minute marathon in the 'Tour De Las Americas' Regatas Resistencia Open in Argentina to win the inaugural PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash event at theClub Regatas Resistencia in Resistencia.

Less than 24 hours after beating Adrian Waller in a five-game semi - thereby avenging two Tour final defeats in a row by the Englishman over the last two weeks - top seed Koukal faced Rafael F Alarcon, the second-seeded Brazilian whom he defeated in four games in last year's Cerdil Open final in Brazil.

The top-ranked Czech player raced to a two-game lead before Alarcon regained the upper hand in the third to move 7-2 ahead.

But Koukal clawed his way back and twice was just a single-point away from victory.

However, the Brazilian saved both match-balls before converting his own to reduce the deficit.

Koukal again led in the fourth - and again Alarcon re-established control to force a fifth-game decider - much to the delight of the capacity crowd.

The Czech charged ahead to lead again - but this time there was no comeback for the Brazilian. As Koukal clinched his epic 11-8, 11-6, 10-12, 10-12, 11-7 victory, the 27-year-old from Prague threw his racket in the air in jubilation as the crowd rose to give both players a standing ovation..

The triumph marks the 18th PSA World Tour title of Koukal's career.

Koukal Clings On In Argentina

Czech challenger Jan Koukal avenged two successive defeats by Adrian Waller in the last two weeks when he beat the Englishman in five games to reach the final of the 'Tour De Las Americas' Regatas Resistencia Open in Argentina.

Waller looked set to claim a hat-trick of wins over the Czech champion as romped to a two-game lead in the semi-finals of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash event in its first year at the Club Regatas Resistencia in Resistencia.

The 21-year-old third seed from Enfield had four match-balls in the marathon third game, but top seed Koukal kept control as he took the game 16-14 to keep the match alive.

The Czech number one dug deep to maintain the upper hand - and, after 75 minutes, threw his racket in the air in jubilation as he clinched his sensational 6-11, 6-11, 16-14, 11-9, 11-8 victory.

The match was a replay of May's Cerdil Open final in Brazil and last week's Paraguay Open climax in Asuncion - both of which Waller won in five games!

The win takes Koukal into his fourth PSA Tour final of the year, and the 27th of his career.

The 27-year-old from Prague will face Brazilian hero Rafael F Alarcon, the No2 seed from Sao Paulo who recovered from a game down to beat fourth-seeded American Christopher Gordon 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 12-10 in 55 minutes.

The semi-final success takes 34-year-old Alarcon, ranked just one place lower than Koukal in the world, into the 26th Tour final of his career - but the South American's first in Argentina!

Waller Waltzes On In Argentina

England's Adrian Waller took just 21 minutes to earn a place in the semi-finals of the 'Tour De Las Americas' Regatas Resistencia Open in Argentina as he bids to win his third successive PSA World Tour squash title in South America in two weeks.

The 21-year-old from Enfield despatched local hope Robertino Pezzota, a 28-year-old qualifier from the Argentinean city of Rosario, 11-3, 11-6, 11-4 in the quarter-0finals of the PSA Challenger 10 event in its first year at the Club Regatas Resistencia in Resistencia.

In a replay of May's Cerdil Open final in Brazil and last week's Paraguay Open climax in Asuncion - both of which he won in five games - third seed Waller will now face top seed Jan Koukal.

The Czech number one needed 45 minutes to see off another Argentina qualifier Hernan D'Arcangelo 14-16, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9.

Brazilian Rafael F Alarcon leads South American interest in the other semi-final. The No2 seed from Sao Paulo survived a lengthy third tie-break game to beat Canadian Adrian Dudzicki 11-7, 11-4, 21-19 and will now face North American hope Christopher Gordon.

The New York-born fourth seed - playing in his first Tour event south of the border this year - battled for 90 minutes to overcome Welshman Peter Creed 11-13, 11-3, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7.
