Beddoes Battles To Winnipeg Win

Beddoes Battles To Winnipeg Win

England's Emma Beddoes made up for the disappointment of finishing as runner-up two years ago by winning the 2011 Women's Meadowood Pharmacy Squash Open at the Winnipeg Winter Club in Winnipeg, Canada.

But the 25-year-old top seed was pushed to the limit in the final of the WISPA World Tour Tour 8 event by surprise opponent Miranda Ranieri - the fifth seed from Canada who made her breakthrough in the previous round when second seed Dominique Lloyd-Walter was forced to retire with a foot injury.

The final was locked at one game each when Ranieri upped the tempo to move 2/1 ahead.

"Her pace and deceptive flicks completely caught Beddoes off guard, her first sign of weakness of the tournament," said tournament spokesman Cam Mundle. "However Beddoes dug deep going back to her fundamentals.

"The fourth and fifth were close hard fought battles, but Beddoes prevailed with her amazing control and shot-making."

Beddoes, the world No26 from Nottingham, was delighted with her 11-9, 4-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8 victory - and praised the tournament organisers: "There is always such a great crowd, we are treated so well and feel comfortable and at home when we come to this tournament."

The win marks Beddoes' sixth WISPA World Tour title - but her first in Canada.
