Delierre Back On Top In Rhode Island

Canadian Shawn Delierre made it onto the winner's podium at a PSA World Tour squash event for the first time in more than three years after completing a sensational run in the $10,000 Rhodysquash RI Open at St George's School in Rhode Island, USA.

The unseeded 28-year-old from Montreal picked off some notable scalps on the way through to his surprise appearance in the final - including sixth-seeded Irishman John Rooney and Mexico's No4 seed Cesar Salazar.

But it was in the tenth Tour final of his career that Delierre, a former word No40, pulled off his most impressive victory since undergoing leg surgery last year.

Currently ranked 74 in PSA world rankings, Delierre battled for 97 minutes to overcome top seed Julian Illingworth, the world No35 from the USA, 11-9, 12-10, 9-11, 12-10.

The triumph not only denied Illingworth his second successive Tour title in Rhode Island, but gave Delierre the seventh Tour trophy of his career - and his first since winning the GoodLife Open in Ottawa in October 2007.

Delierre Pushes Through To Rhode Island Semis

Unseeded Canadian Shawn Delierre will contest the semi-finals of the Rhodysquash RI Open after overcoming Australia's Wade Johnstone in the quarter-finals of the $10,000 PSA World Tour squash event at St George's School in Rhode Island, USA.

But the 28-year-old from Montreal made his breakthrough in the opening round where he ousted sixth-seeded Irishman John Rooney in straight games.

Johnstone also made it through to the last eight after the biggest first round upset - a four-game win over local hero Gilly Lane, the No2 seed from the USA, in a 75-mnute marathon.

Delierre had the upper hand in the quarter-finals, however, beating the US-based 29-year-old from Perth 11-8, 11-8, 11-9 in 52 minutes.

The Canadian will now meet fourth seed Cesar Salazar for a place in the final. The 22-year-old Mexican beat England's No7 seed Shaun le Roux 11-6, 11-9, 11-5.

Event favourite Julian Illingworth made it through to the semis with an 11-5, 14-12, 11-3 victory over eighth seed Jaymie Haycocks.

The 26-year-old world No34 from New York will now line up against a second Englishman Adrian Waller after the third seed beat fifth-seeded Mexican Eric Galvez 12-10, 11-6, 11-4.
