Sharpes Cuts
It In Jordan
A battle to
win the first PSA World Tour squash title of their lives was fought out
between two English teenagers in the First Insurance Open in Jordan - and
it was 18-year-old Charles Sharpes who prevailed in the final of the
inaugural $3,000 event at the Al Hussein Sport City in the country's
capital Amman to become the lowest-seeded player to win a Tour event this
year.
The
London-born eighth seed made his breakthrough in the quarter-finals where he
survived a five-game marathon to beat top-seeded compatriot Ben Ford, a
35-year-old from London, 11-13, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-3 in 78 minutes.
In the final,
Sharpes faced 19-year-old second seed Ben Coleman, an England junior
international team-mate.
But Sharpes,
the current English Junior champion, was too strong for Coleman, the reigning
British Junior champion, winning 11-6, 11-5, 11-8 in 50 minutes to become the
newest PSA Tour title-holder.
