Oriol Salvia And Xisela Aranda Crowned Champions Of Spain

The Spanish National Championships took place last weekend in Valencia with both number one seeds emerging victorious.

The qualifying phases and first round matches took place at Tutempo Sports and fitness centre in Paterno before moving to the centre of Valencia and the Polideportivo Municipal El Carmen for the final rounds.

Both the mens and womens finals went according to seeding. With Borja Golan not playing in the torneo the mens final was between Oriol Salvio of Cataluyna, the winner of the PSA Rocafort Open in 2008 and current number 146 in the world Alex Garbi, from Castellon.

On the way to the final Salvio had beaten fellow Catalan player Ivan Flores 3-1 in the quarter final and David Vidal of the Baelerics 3-0.

Garbi had the easier draw and had dispersed of emerging youngster Hugo Varela of Galicia in the semi-final by a score of 3-0. The final itself went the way of the Catalan, as Salvio completed a 3-0 victory to become the Spanish National champion for the second time.

In the womenīs event Xisela Aranda of Galicia was never really troubled until the final when she played the number 2 seed Margaux Moros from Valencia.

Moros came into the final on the back of an hard semi final match with Alicia Alvarez of Madrid. The Madrllena was given a wild card to the Womens world in her home city in 2007 where she had been beaten in straight sets by Venessa Atkinson.

The game between Moros and Alvarez was one of the closest of the torneo with the home favourite, Moros eventually edging the tight match 3-2.

In the final Aranda was tested for the first time, coming back from 8-7 down to win the first set 12-10. The second and third games were also competitive but both went the Galicians way to give her a straight sets victory and her first ever national championship.

Alvarez took some comfort in beating Margaux Morosīsister Chantal in the 3rd - 4th play off, whilst David Vidal beat Hugo Varela to take 3rd place in the mens competition

In the Womans consolation plates youngsters Marina De Juan of Valencia and Anna Bernabeu of Cataluyna played out an entertaining match that Marina won 3-0 and in the Mens consolation plate Francis Molina of Andalucia overcame Quique Colomina of Valencia
