Jaclyn Hawkes Wins Chairman's Cup
Jaclyn Hawkes
clinched the Women's Chairman's Cup in Hong Kong - but the top
seed from New Zealand had to fight back from 1/2 down to overcome third
seed Donna Urquhart in the final of the $16,000 WISPA World Tour
squash event at the Hong Kong Squash Centre.
Hawkes, the New Zealand champion from Auckland, was celebrating
her first WISPA Tour final appearance since March 2008.
The 27-year-old - who was born in Hong Kong - had to dig deep to
fight off Australian Urquhart's determined challenge.
And, after a 43-minute five-game battle, Hawkes finally emerged
the champion of the inaugural event after beating the 23-year-old New South
Wales 11-6, 7-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-5.
The win marks the third WISPA World Tour title of the Kiwi's
career.
Donna Downs Chiu In Chairman's Cup
Australia's third seed Donna Urquhart dashed domestic
hopes of success in the Women's Chairman's Cup in Hong Kong when
she upset second-seeded local star Rebecca Chiu in today's (Friday)
semi-finals of the $16,000 WISPA World Tour squash event at the Hong
Kong Squash Centre.
Chiu went down 11-4, 12-10, 11-8 as 23-year-old Urquhart, from
New South Wales, celebrated reaching her ninth WISPA final.
Urquhart will now face favourite Jaclyn Hawkes following
the New Zealander's 11-9, 11-8, 11-8 victory over India's No4 seed Joshna
Chinappa.
Hawkes, the New Zealand national champion, will also be
celebrating her ninth Tour final appearance.
Chinappa Takes Out Tong In Hong Kong
India's Joshna Chinappa ended 17-year-old Tong Tsz-Wing's
brave run in the Women's Chairman's Cup in Hong Kong when she beat
the local qualifier in today's (Thursday) quarter-finals of the $16,000 WISPA
World Tour squash event at the Hong Kong Squash Centre.
Tong upset South Korea's No7 seed Song Sun-Mi in the first
round. But fourth seed Chinappa was too strong for the teenager, winning 12-10,
11-5, 11-9 to secure a place in the semi-finals.
The 23-year-old from Chennai will face top seed Jaclyn Hawkes,
the New Zealander who needed four games to overcome Elise Ng, the No8
seed from Hong Kong, 11-9, 9-11, 11-3, 11-7.
Donna Urquhart
claimed her expected place in the last four – but the third seed from Australia
was taken the full distance by England's sixth seed Lauren Siddall before
prevailing 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 10-12, 12-10.
The 23-year-old from New South Wales will now meet Hong Kong's
second seed Rebecca Chiu, a 4-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-7 winner over fellow
countrywoman Joey Chan.
