Giant-Killer Gawad Grabs Barcelona Crown

Egyptian teenager Karim Abdel Gawad swept through the field of the XIII Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona Open to lift the PSA World Tour Super Satellite squash title at the Shopping Center L'Illa Diagonal in the Spanish city of Barcelona as the seventh seed!

The 18-year-old giant-killer from Cairo despatched fourth-seeded Frenchman Gregoire Marche in the quarter-finals before recovering from 2/1 down in the semi-finals to topple top seed Yann Perrin, also from France.

Gawad faced third seed Steve Finitsis in the final after the Australian battled to a five game win over second-seeded Dutchman Dylan Bennett in the other semi.

But Gawad maintained his devastating form, stemming a third game fight back by the 26-year-old Queenslander to win 11-6, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8.

Gawad becomes the third Egyptian to win the title in the 13 years of the event since 1993 – and is celebrating the second PSA Tour success of his brief career to date.
