Hosts Denied Both U19
Titles In Italian Junior Open
England's Robert Downer
and Austria's Sandra Polak emerged triumphant in the U19 finals in
the Italian Junior Open Squash Championships – putting paid to a domestic
double in the European Squash Federation Junior Circuit event at the
FIGS National Centre in Riccione, Italy.
Downer, a 17-year-old from
Hampshire, was seeded to win the men's title – but his Italian opponent
Dimitri Diamadopoulos progressed two rounds beyond his seeded position to
make a surprise appearance in the climax.
It took the Englishman
four games, but Downer ultimately prevailed 11-6, 11-9, 4-11, 11-5 to add the
Italian title to the Irish Junior U19 Open crown he won last November in
Galway.
The women's event was run
in a pool format – with Sandra Polak, the 17-year-old winner of the
Austrian Junior Open title in March, coming through unscathed after beating
Italy's Elisabetta Priante 5-11, 11-2, 11-5, 11-4.
