Miguel Angel Rodriguez Wins 10th Tour Title In Guatemala
Colombian Miguel Angel
Rodriguez extended a winning run over Eric Galvez when he beat his
Mexican rival in the final of the Internacional Sporta Open to win the
$15,000 PSA Tour squash event in its second year at Sporta in
Santa Catarina Pinula, Guatemala.
"It was an awesome final,
with a packed crowd of more than 250 at Sporta with high hopes of watching an
excellent game," said event promoter Luis Arturo Mérida.
Second seed Galvez
dominated the first game and led 6-4 in the second. But top seed Rodriguez
fought back to draw level.
The third game saw the
23-year-old from Bogotá raise his game even further as Rodriguez went on to win
the match 7-11, 11-8, 11-2, 11-2 to lift the title.
The triumph marked the
tenth PSA Tour title for Rodriguez, the world No23 and highest-ranked Colombian
of all-time.
"The event was a total
success in all aspects," added Mérida. "The level of play was amazing and the
sportsmanship shown by the players on every game. We had such a good experience
that we plan to run the tournament again next year - hopefully with more
benefits to the players."
Rodriguez & Galvez Line Up In Guatemala
Top seeds Miguel Angel
Rodriguez and Eric Galvez will contest the final of the
Internacional Sporta Open after contrasting semi-final victories in the
$15,000 PSA Tour squash event in its second year at Sporta in
Santa Catarina Pinula, Guatemala.
Colombian Miguel Angel
Rodriguez needed four games to overcome his second Salazar twin in 48 hours.
After beating Cesar Salazar in the first round, the top seed from Bogotá
defeated Arturo Salazar, the fourth seed, 11-9, 11-13, 11-9, 11-9 to
reach the 17th Tour final of his career.
It was also a
Mexican/Colombian clash in the other semi - but this time it was a Mexican
success as second seed Galvez despatched unseeded Bernardo Samper 11-6,
11-8, 11-6 to earn his 16th appearance in a PSA Tour final.
The final will mark the
pair's eighth Tour meeting since September 2005 - but their first since
contesting the Mexico City Open final in December 2007. Galvez will be
looking to reduce the Colombian's 5-2 head-to-head advantage.
Samper Secures Semi-Final Slot In Sporta
Open
Unseeded Colombian
Bernardo Samper produced his second successive upset in the Internacional
Sporta Open by beating fourth-seeded Mexican Jorge Isaac Baltazar
Ferreira in five games to reach the semi-finals of the $15,000 PSA Tour
squash event in its second year at Sporta in Santa Catarina Pinula,
Guatemala.
After despatching sixth
seed Gilly Lane in the opening round, the New-York-based 26-year-old
battled to a 9-11, 11-3, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8 victory over Baltazar Ferreira, the
world No55 from Mexico City.
Samper, the world No 111
competing in his first Tour event since November, will now face a further
Mexican Eric Galvez. The second seed from Puebla dismissed Brazilian
Rafael F Alarcon 11-7, 5-11, 11-5, 11-6.
The other semi-final will
also be a Colombian/Mexican encounter. Miguel Angel Rodriguez, from the
Colombian capital Bogotá, ended the run of Mexican qualifier Erik Tepos
Valtierra, winning 11-9, 13-15, 11-2, 11-5. The top seed will now meet
Arturo Salazar, the twin brother of his first round victim Cesar Salazar.
Third seed Arturo Salazar
concluded European interest in the Guatemala event when he beat France's Yann
Perrin, the No7 seed, 11-3, 11-4, 9-11, 11-2.
Valtierra Vanquishes Gaskin In Guatemala
Mexican qualifier Erik
Tepos Valtierra stunned eighth seed Arthur Gaskin in the opening
round of the Internacional Sporta Open to claim an unexpected place in
the quarter-finals of the $15,000 PSA Tour squash event in its second
year at Sporta in Santa Catarina Pinula, Guatemala.
The 22-year-old from
Mexico City – ranked 219 in the world – recovered from two games down to topple
Irishman Gaskin, the world No83, 1-11, 11-13, 12-10, 11-1, 11-7.
Tepos Valtierra will now
face top-seeded Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez, who beat last year's
runner-up Cesar Salazar – also from Mexico - 12-10, 11-8, 11-7.
Two other players also
failed to fulfil their seedings: Sixth seed Gilly Lane, from the USA,
went down 11-4, 11-7, 11-6 to unseeded Colombian Bernardo Samper, while
Brazilian Rafael F Alarcon, also unseeded, defeated New Zealand's No5
seed Campbell Grayson 11-9, 9-11, 11-3, 11-4.
