Naudé claims fourth WISPA
title in Eindhoven
Annelize Naudé claimed the fourth WISPA title of her career during the Forexx
Eindhoven Open 2009. The 32-year old Dutch player, who earlier won tournaments
in France (2008), Switzerland (2004) and Denmark (2002), put on an impressive
display of high quality squash against youngster Victoria Lust and never let her
English opponent settle in the match. Naudé stormed through the first two games
for the loss of only four points with faultless squash. The 19-year old Lust
seemed to be more at ease in the third, but a victory for the 2-time Dutch
Champion was never in doubt. With a 11-2, 11-2, 11-6 score line Naudé secured an
important tournament win, which is sure to boast her position (36th)
on the WISPA World Rankings after dropping outside the top-30 for the first time
in eight years earlier this month. The runner-up spot of her promising opponent,
the fourth one in as many months, will also see Lust continue her impressive
rise on the all important rankings.
Normal order restored in Eindhoven
Normal
order was restored tonight during the semi finals of the Forexx Eindhoven Open
2009 when Annelize Naudé and Victoria Lust secured a place in the final of the
new WISPA Tour 4 championship in the Netherlands. 32-year old Naudé was the
first player to move through to the event’s climax. The tournament favourite
shook off a spirited challenge of compatriot Orla Noom to qualify for her first
final on the professional women’s circuit since February last year. After
sharing the first two games, the third proved crucial in the tense match between
the two Dutch players. Naudé used all her experience to secure the important
lead and quickly raced away at the beginning of the fourth to clinch a 11-5,
9-11, 11-9, 11-4 victory over her team mate in the Dutch national team.
In tomorrow’s final the world number 36 will face another promising youngster
who is enjoying a sensational run of form. The 19-year old Victoria Lust ended
the fairytale comeback of Nicolette Fernandes in a close fought match (10-12,
11-5, 14-12, 11-8) to edge one step closer to her maiden WISPA title. Amazingly
enough it will be Lust’s fourth WISPA final in as many months, an incredible run
which saw her shoot up the rankings from 125 to 62. Tomorrow’s final promises to
be a close affair between experience and talent. The pair met once in their
career, which was last month during the Swedish Open 2009, with Lust coming out
a surprising five game winner.
Stunning upsets for Fernandes and Lust in Eindhoven
Nicolette Fernandes and
Victoria Lust registered stunning results to gatecrash the semi finals of the
Forexx Eindhoven Open 2009. In her first tournament since April 2007, the
25-year old Fernandes came back from 2-1 down to beat fourth seeded Celia
Allamargot from France 11-9 in the fifth and final game. The former world number
27, who was forced out of the game for nearly 2 years with a serious knee
injury, now faces another surprise semi finalist in the fast improving Victoria
Lust. The 19-year old from England ousted Manuela Manetta in a 67-minute match,
winning three tiebreak’s to score a notable upset over the event’s number two
seed: 6-11, 17-15, 12-10, 12-10.
In the top half of the draw a Dutch finalist is secured in the new WISPA Tour 4
event in the Netherlands after Annelize Naudé and Orla Noom both scored
comprehensive victories over Leonie Holt from England and Irina Assal from
Russia. Whilst the World Rankings don’t suggest much difference, the 32-year old
Naudé enters the semi finals as firm favourite. The world number 36, hailing
from Amsterdam, never lost to her nine year younger compatriot, ranked 40th
in the world. The last time the pair met was one month ago in the Dutch
Nationals with Naudé coming out on top.
Fernandes makes successful comeback
Nicolette
Fernandes made a successful comeback during the Forexx Eindhoven Open 2009 after
a 23-month absence due to injury. The 25-year old from Guyana defeated Dutch
junior Cigany Sillevis in qualifying, before ousting Swedish ace Anna-Carin
Forstadius (6) in the first round of the WISPA Tour 4 championship. Fernandes,
who last came in action during the Qatar Classic in April 2007 before suffering
her long term knee injury, now faces fourth seeded Celia Allamargot in
tomorrow’s quarter finals after the French girl downed the local favourite Milou
van der Heijden.
Leonie Holt
scored another notable upset in the first round of the new WISPA event in the
Dutch city of Eindhoven when she claimed the scalp of Dutch international Dagmar
Vermeulen (7). Holt will now take on the event’s favourite Annelize Naudé who
defeated Kerri Shields from Ireland in straight games. Manuela Manetta (2) and
Orla Noom (3) also moved through to the last eight of the Forexx Eindhoven Open
2009. Manetta beat Milja Dorenbos, while Noom disposed of Laura Pomportes.
