Q-sourcing trophy for Finitsis
Steve Finitsis claimed the inaugural Q-sourcing Squash Trophy with a four games
win over American Gilly Lane. Both players entertained the crowd with a display
of fast and attacking squash, but it was the 25-year old from Brisbane who drew
first blood taking the first game. The world number 88 seemed to have the upper
hand in the second game as well in the early parts, but it was Lane who
responded strong to clinch the second. The third and fourth however went the
Aussie’s way as he tightened the grip on his opponent who played his maiden PSA
final to secure his fifth title of his career. Remarkably Finitsis won all of
them this year. In May of this year he claimed four straight PSA tournament
victories in Australia. Both Lane and Finitsis will now prepare for the KEAN
Delft Open 2008, which takes place later this month in the Dutch city of Delft.
Finitsis is top seed for this new PSA event, Lane is seeded second.
The Q-sourcing Squash Trophy 2008 is part of the Forexx Pro Tour Squash
2008-2009, which consists of 10 professional tournaments, all counting towards
the World Rankings. The Forexx Pro Tour gives the Dutch men the chance to
earn wildcards for next year’s Dutch Open, while the women will be competing
to earn main draw and qualifying places for the Forexx Women’s World Open Squash
2009. This official individual World Championship for women takes place next
year from September 20-27 in the Dutch capital Amsterdam.
Expected Q-sourcing final in Rotterdam
The final of the Q-sourcing Squash Trophy 2008 will be an American-Australian
affair as both Gilly Lane and Steve Finitsis moved through to the final round in
convincing style. 25-year old Finitsis, seeded second in the new PSA Satellite
event in Rotterdam, proved a bit too strong for Dutch international Piedro
Schweertman, winning in straight games after 36 minutes: 11-7, 11-8, 11-7. The
event’s top seed Lane needed 10 minutes less to dispose of Matias Tuomi (5) from
Finland, only dropping 15 points in the process: 11-7, 11-6, 11-2. With both
favorites showing good form in the early rounds, the final shapes up to be an
exciting climax to the tournament!
