Barrington Beats Richards In African Open Final

Joey Barrington emerged triumphant in the all-English final of the African Open, beating Tom Richards to claim the $23,250 PSA Tour squash title at the Ikoyi Club in Lagos, Nigeria.

It was the pair's first meeting on the Tour, but the experienced Barrington - the 28-year-old top seed from Glastonbury in Somerset - was too strong for fourth seed Richards, beating the 22-year-old from Walton-on-Thames in Surrey 11-3, 11-6, 11-5.

The success marks the sixth - and biggest - PSA Tour title won by Barrington, son of the illustrious Jonah Barrington who won six British Open titles more than three decades ago.

Bhattacharya Betters Aziz In African Open Upset

India’s Ritwik Bhattacharya produced his best result of the year in the quarter-finals of the  African Open when he upset second-seeded Egyptian Omar Abdel Aziz to reach the last four of the $20,000 PSA Tour squash event at the Ikoyi Club in Lagos, Nigeria.

The 29-year-old fifth seed from Mumbai battled from a game down to beat Aziz, ranked 19 places higher in the world, 9-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-4.

Bhattacharya will now face England’s fourth seed Tom Richards for a place in the final.

There will be English interest in the other semi-final where favourite Joey Barrington takes on Jan Koukal, the third seed from the Czech Republic.
