Rodriguez Claims Curitiba Crown

Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez battled for 66 minutes in the final of the Curitiba Open to win the $15,000
PSA Tour squash event at the Barigui Shopping Mall in Curitiba in Brazil.

The top seed from Bogotá, who was celebrating his 14th time in a Tour final, was facing surprise English opponent Tom Richards - the No8 seed from Surrey who had survived hour-long matches against higher seeds in the previous two rounds to earn a place in his maiden Tour final.

The 22-year-old Colombian twice led in the match - and 21-year-old Richards twice drew level.

But it was South American champion Rodriguez who prevailed in the decider to record an 11-9, 2-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8 victory - and the seventh PSA Tour title of his career.

Richards Crashes Into Curitiba Climax

Englishman Tom Richards, the eighth seed, claimed two successive upsets in the Curitiba Open in Brazil to earn a surprise place in the final of the $15,000 PSA Tour squash event at the Barigui Shopping Mall in Curitiba, the largest city in Southern Brazil.

The 21-year-old from Surrey, still fighting back to full fitness after an eight-month lay-off last year following knee surgery, made his breakthrough in the quarter-finals when he beat local hero Rafael F Alarcon, the second seed from Sao Paulo, 6-11, 11-10 (3-1), 10-11 (1-3), 11-10 (2-0), 11-6 in 65 minutes.

In the semis, Richards defeated seventh-seeded Mexican Arturo Salazar 11-8, 11-3, 2-11, 2-11, 11-9 in another hour-long battle to record his first appearance in a PSA Tour final.

Richards will face top seed Miguel Angel Rodriguez - but the Colombian favourite was taken the full distance by Dylan Bennett, the fourth seed from the
Netherlands, before winning 11-6, 2-11, 10-11 (0-2), 11-7, 11-6 in 87 minutes.

The 22-year-old from Bogotá is celebrating his 14th time in a Tour final.

Alarcon Races To Curitiba Quarters

Rafael F Alarcon
single-handedly led local interest through to the quarter-finals of the Curitiba Open after romping to a 17-minute first round victory in the $15,000 PSA Tour squash event being staged in Curitiba, the largest city in Southern Brazil, for the first time since 1994.

Alarcon, the 30-year-old second seed from Sao Paolo, despatched fellow countryman Glaucio Novack, a qualifier, 11-4, 11-5, 11-6 and will now take on Englishman Tom Richards for a place in the semi-finals at the Barigui Shopping Mall.

The No: 8 seed from Surrey needed 55 minutes to overcome Spaniard David Vidal 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 11-4.

Alarcon is expected to meet Miguel Angel Rodriguez in an all-South American final on Sunday. The top seed from
Colombia defeated Brazilian Fabio Cechin 11-10 (2-0), 11-3, 11-5.
