Delierre Retains Goodlife Title In
Ottawa
In
a repeat of last year's final of the Goodlife Open, second-seeded
Canadian Shawn Delierre again defeated Mexican favourite Eric
Galvez to win the 1-star
PSA Tour
squash event at the Goodlife Fitness Club in Ottawa,
Canada.
This time around was a very tense physical affair. Galvez won the first
game after a tie-break, then the Canadian took the second to draw
level.
"Throughout the match there was a lot of physical contact, resulting in
numerous lets," said tournament organiser Heather Wallace.
"Galvez was unable to keep his racquet in his hand at some of the
decisions, resulting in a conduct stroke at 13-13 in the third. Delierre
then hit a nick serve to take the third game 15-13 to lead 2/1.
"Both players had expended so much physical and mental energy in the
third game, so much so that Galvez never recovered his intensity or
focus from the outcome of the third game," added Wallace.
Delierre went on to win the fourth game to take the match 10-11 (2-0),
11-8, 11-10 (5-3), 11-3 after 71 minutes - thereby successfully
defending his title.
"There is something about
Ottawa that gets me fired up to play squash!” said the 25-year-old from
Montreal who now boats six PSA Tour titles from seven final appearances.
Canadian Finalist Assured In
Ottawa
Victories in the quarter-finals of the Goodlife
Open by second seed Shawn Delierre and fourth seed David
Phillips will ensure Canadian interest in the final of the 1-star
PSA Tour
squash event at the
Goodlife Fitness Club in
Ottawa,
Canada.
Delierre dominated in his match over 'hometown boy' Robin Clarke,
the sixth seed from
Ottawa
- running out a comfortable 11-1, 11-10 (3-1), 11-8 winner in 39
minutes.
"Shawn was in no mood to let the hometown fans get behind
Robin," said tournament organiser Heather Wallace. "He had Robin
off balance throughout the match, attacking the front of the court. He
will now meet fellow Montrealer David Phillips in the semis."
Phillips beat
Austria's No8 seed Aqeel Rehman 11-4, 11-8, 11-3.
The other semi final will feature Bernardo Samper,
the third seed from
Colombia, and Mexican favourite Eric Galvez.
Clarke & Delierre Set Up Local Showdown In
Ottawa
Robin
Clarke
and Shawn Delierre survived their first round matches in the Goodlife
Open to set up an all-Canadian quarter-final clash in 1-star
PSA Tour
squash
event at the Goodlife Fitness Club in
Ottawa,
Canada.
Clarke, the sixth seed from Ottawa, beat Canadian qualifier Daniel Sibley
11-8, 11-2, 11-10 (2-0), while Delierre, the second seed, defeated English
qualifier Chris Truswell 11-9, 4-11, 11-5, 11-6.
"All the seeds easily advanced to the quarter final stage - which sets the stage
for the much-anticipated showdown between local favourite Robin Clarke & Shawn
Delierre, from nearby
Montreal,
in the quarter finals," said tournament organiser Heather Wallace.
Canadians Capture Three Goodlife Qualifiers
Canadian qualifying success in the Goodlife Open has led to
domestic interest in all but one of the first round matches in the
1-star
PSA Tour
squash event at the Goodlife Fitness Club in
Ottawa,
Canada.
Calgary's Andrew McDougall enjoyed a comfortable 11-6, 11-6, 11-4
win over fellow Canadian Matthew Serediak, while Dave Glass,
from Winnipeg, survived a fast-paced match against Brazilian Fabio
Cechin, winning 9-11, 11-0, 11-7, 11-10 (4-2).
The match of the day was between
Ontario's Dan Sibley and England's James Snell. The
higher-ranked Englishman took a 2/1 lead, then squandered two
match-balls before Sibley fought back to claim an impressive 11-10
(3-1), 9-11, 8-11, 11-10 (2-0), 11-6 win in 77 minutes.
