Schonborn Shines In
Atlanta
South African Regardt Schonborn claimed the first PSA
Tour title of his career when he beat Egyptian Ahmed
Maged Hamza in the final of the DragonDoc Squash
Championship in
Atlanta,
USA.
After making his breakthrough in the quarter-finals when he
defeated Mexican favourite Jose Angel Becerril in five
games, fifth seed Schonborn reached his maiden Tour final
after despatching Zimbabwean qualifier Shaun Johnstone in
the semi-finals.
Hamza, the 31-year-old fourth seed, was appearing in his second
PSA final after beating Pakistani Khayal Muhammad Khan,
the No7 seed, in the other semi.
But, after recovering from the loss of the first game, it was
24-year-old Schonborn who shined in Georgia - triumphing 8-11,
11-6, 11-8, 11-9 in 51 minutes to record his breakthrough
success.
Schonborn & Hamza Make DragonDoc Final
South Africa's Regardt Schonborn and Egyptian Ahmed Maged Hamza
- both based in the USA - will contest the final of the
DragonDoc Championship after prevailing in four-game
semi-finals in the inaugural PSA Tour squash event in
Atlanta, USA.
Schonborn made his breakthrough in the quarter-finals after
fighting back from 0/2 down to upset Mexican favourite Jose
Angel Becerril. The 24-year-old fifth seed then despatched
Zimbabwean qualifier Shaun Johnstone 11-7, 5-11, 11-7, 11-10
(2-0) to claim his first appearance in a PSA Tour final.
Hamza's surprise semi-final opponent was Pakistani Khayal
Muhammad Khan, the No7 seed who knocked out second-seeded
Zambian Patrick Chifunda in the previous round.
But,
after dropping the opening game, 31-year-old Hamza romped to an
8-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-5 victory over Khan in 39 minutes to earn
the second Tour final appearance of his career.
Seeds Suffer In DragonDoc Championship
It was a disappointing day for Canadian seeds in the first round of
the DragonDoc Squash Championship, the inaugural PSA Tour
event in
Atlanta,
USA.
Patrick Bedore
was the biggest casualty, the third seed from
Montreal going down 11-5, 11-5, 11-7 in 29 minutes to the USA's
unseeded Gilly Lane. The 21-year-old from Philadelphia, in
only his second PSA Tour event, now meets Zimbabwe qualifier Shaun
Johnstone in the quarter-finals.
Johnstone also upset a Canadian seed - beating sixth seed Andrew
McDougall, from Calgary, 11-9, 11-7, 11-10 (2-0).
English qualifier Shahid Khan also progressed to an unexpected
quarter-final berth. The 28-year-old from Ipswich despatched
eighth-seeded Canadian Michal Reid 11-7, 6-11, 11-8, 11-1 and
will now face
Egypt's fourth seed Ahmed Maged Hamza for a place in the last
four.
