Le Roux Celebrates Maiden PSA Tour Title In Cardiff

England's Shaun le Roux claimed his first PSA Tour when he beat fellow countryman Ben Ford in the final of the Welsh Open Squash Championship at St Mellons Country Club in Cardiff.

After powering past unseeded Welshman Peter Creed in the semi-finals, the 20-year-old third seed from Castleford in Yorkshire was taken to tie-breaks in the first two games before upsetting second seed Ford 11-10 (2-0), 10-11 (1-3), 11-4, 11-8 in 53 minutes to clinch the title.

The climax marked 31-year-old Ford's second PSA Tour final appearance in two weeks after winning his maiden Tour trophy at Le Sport Open in Wales last month.

Unseeded English teenager Eddie Charlton pulled off a major upset in the first round of the Welsh Open Squash Championship when he defeated top-seeded Welshman Rob Sutherland on the opening day of action in the PSA Tour event at St Mellons Country Club in Cardiff.

The 18-year-old from Mansfield in Nottinghamshire beat favourite Sutherland 11-6, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8 in 43 minutes - and will now face another local player Peter Creed for a place in the last four.

Unseeded Creed also claimed an unexpected berth in the quarter-finals when he outlasted fifth-seeded South African Jason Barry 11-9, 5-11, 11-7, 10-11 (0-2), 11-10 (2-0) in 77 minutes.

Jethro Binns set up a surprise all-Welsh quarter-final when he upset Finland's sixth seed Matias Tuomi 11-6, 11-1, 8-11, 11-7. The unseeded Abergavenny-born 22-year-old will take on fellow countryman Ricky Davies after the fourth seed from Newport beat English qualifier Richard Birks 11-8, 11-6, 11-3.
