Barrington Battles To
Maiden Home Tour Title
England's
Joey Barrington celebrated his first PSA Tour title on home soil
when he beat French qualifier Mathieu Castagnet in the final of the
Hithercroft Squash Open at Hithercroft Squash Club in the English
county of Oxfordshire.
The 27-year-old from
Glastonbury in Somerset had been in fine form throughout the week in the
1-star Tour event in its second year at Hithercroft.
Castagnet made his
breakthrough in the event after upsetting England's No2 seed Bradley Ball
in the opening round - and went on to reach the biggest final of his career.
Barrington took the opening
game for the loss of just four points - but his 20-year-old opponent from Le
Mans forged a 9-6 lead in the second as the packed crowd sensed a further
upset.
But Barrington stuck to his
game-plan and restored his advantage to run out an 11-4, 11-10 (2-0), 11-5
victor.
"There is a lot of pressure
being No1 seed," said the new champion later. "Other seeds fell, so it was up
to me to push on through. I came back from 10-7 in the second and that
finished him off really.
"I came here to win it, so job
done. I'm pleased to be back after injury and I am playing by best squash
again now, so I hope to carry it through the summer and look forward to next
season," added Barrington after securing the fifth PSA Tour title of his
career.
Castagnet Captures Final
Slot In Hithercroft Open
French qualifier Mathieu
Castagnet achieved the best PSA Tour success of his career to date
when he made it through to the final of the Hithercroft Squash Club in
the English county of Oxfordshire.
The 20-year-old from Le Mans
despatched fellow qualifier John Rooney, from Ireland, 7-11, 11-9,
11-8, 11-4 in 55 minutes - and is now one match away from recording his first
Tour title success.
His opponent spent 40 minutes
longer reaching the 14th Tour final of his career: In an
eagerly-anticipated all-English semi, favourite Joey Barrington dashed
the hopes of local hero Scott Handley by beating the third seed from
Wallingford 8-11, 11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5 in a 95-minute marathon.
Castagnet Leads French Revolution In Oxfordshire
Qualifier Mathieu Castagnet led a French revolution in the first round of the
Hithercroft Squash Open by upsetting second-seeded Englishman Bradley Ball to
join two other French compatriots in the last eight of the PSA Tour event in its
second year at the Hithercroft Squash Club in the English county of Oxfordshire.
The 20-year-old from Le Mans came from two games down to beat Ball, the world
No34 from Suffolk, 10-11 (1-3), 4-11, 11-8, 11-4, 5-1 ret. in 51 minutes.
But Castagnet was not the only surprise quarter-finalist: Unseeded Yann Perrin
also upset an Englishman when he beat fifth seed Jonathan Harford 10-11 (4-6),
11-3, 11-3, 11-5 in 59 minutes. The 21-year-old from Marseille will now face
Irish qualifier John Rooney, who downed Germany's No4 seed Simon Rosner 11-7,
11-5, 11-5.
Event favourite Joey Barrington took his anticipated place in the quarter-finals
when he defeated fellow Englishman Darren Lewis 11-6, 11-4, 11-7. Barrington
will take on the third Frenchman who made the last eight when he faces seventh
seed Laurent Elriani, an 11-8, 11-2, 11-7 winner over Namibian Ryan Thompson.
