Mexico & USA
share the spoils
Hosts Mexico claimed the Men's Team Gold in Tepic, but were denied a double as the USA collected the women's Gold.

First up in the men's final was Mexico's veteran Jorge Balthazar, facing young Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez who Balthazar had already beaten in the Individual and pool stages. This time it was the Colombian's turn as he gave his team the first point with a 3-1 victory, silencing the packed home crowd.

The top match then went the way of Mexico, with Bernardo Samper unable to find a way past Eric Galvez, who completed a comfortable 3-0 win to level the match.

In the decider Colombia's Santiago Montoya, competing in his twelfth Pan American Championships, faced Mexican youngster Jose Calf Angel. Montoya took the first 9/5, but as Angel upped the pace the Colombian was unable to stay with him, and to cries of "Mexico, Mexico, Mexico" from the crowd Angel took the next three games to give Mexico the title.

In the Women's final the USA cruised into the lead as Michelle Quibell took advantage of an injured Diana Huerta, winning for the loss of a single point. Mexican hopes now rested on individual champion Samantha Teran, but she was unable to repeat her heroics as Meredith Quick gained revenge for her defeat by Teran in the individual final to take the match for the Americans.

  10/9, 9/6, 9/5

Women's Final:
Samantha Teran (Mex) bt Meredith Quick (Usa)
  9/4, 9/5, 9/7

Mexico's Samantha Teran delighted home fans when she captured the women's title at the Pan American Squash Championships in the Mexican city of Tepic.

Teran, the top seed, scored a 9/4, 9/5, 9/7 victory over the Usa's Meredith Quick, who received a walkover into the final after compatriot Louisa Hall injured her ankle and had to withdraw. Teran dominated the final, always keeping Quick at bay as she claimed her second Pan American title.

The men's title went to Argentina, with
Jorge Gutiérrez dashing hopes of a home double with a 10/9, 9/6, 9/5 victory over Eric Galvez. The Argentinian raced to a 7-1 lead in the first game, but the Mexican clawed his way back, amid scenes of great tension, to 7-7.

Galvez celebrated each point he clawed back, receiving a conduct warning for for 'unsportsmanlike conduct' along the way At 8-7 Gutiérrez received a penalty stroke for hitting his opponent with clearly dangerous ball, then Galvez was also penalised for more verbal provocation. Gutiérrez held his nerve to win the final two points as he took the first game 10/9.

The second and third games were calmer, with Gutiérrez recovering from 0-4 to win the second 9/6, and the Argentinian played a series of long and short drop-shots to ease ahead in the third before clinching the title.

The team event, featuring eleven men's and eight women's entries, gets under way after the individual finals.
