Grinham Pregnant Again
Natalie Grinham will be putting her professional squash career on
hold for a minimum of 8 months after the completion of the Dutch
National Championships which begins today in the renowned Frans
Otten Stadion in Amsterdam.
The
35-year old squash star from the Netherlands has just announced that
she is pregnant with her second child. “I've known for over 2,5
months that I was pregnant. Unfortunately I was seeing more of the
bathroom than the squash court during that time”, said the current
world number 12. “I’ve gained a lot of weight over the past month
and there's just no hiding it anymore. Despite being heavier than
usual I'm still playing well and think I have a good chance of
defending my title this weekend”, added the 3-time Dutch champion.
Grinham gave birth to her first child (Kieran) in May 2010 which
found her dropping from 2nd place on the WSA World Rankings to 69th.
In 2011 she made a successful comeback by becoming Dutch National
Champion, European Champion, as well as taking a bronze medal at the
Women’s World Open in Rotterdam.
The success continued in 2012 and 2013 where she not only won
multiple tournaments on the WSA World Tour, including back-to-back
Tournament of Champions titles, but also took silver medals at the
European Individuals both years, and silver at the World Games in
Cali 2013. The Australian born player also recorded her highest
position as a ‘squash mum’ in November 2013, by reaching number 6 in
the world.
Her second pregnancy is not necessarily the end of Grinham’s
professional career. “I haven't made a definite decision whether I
will comeback or not. It's a decision I won't be able to make until
after the birth, but I would love another shot at a World title”,
concluded Grinham who finished as the runner-up in the World
Championships of 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2009.
