23-Jun-04:
SQUASH PLAYER WEBSITE
IS GROWING ...

Bigger. Better. Bilingual.

Changes, changes, changes, ladies and gentlemen! So hang on to your racquet, fasten your seat belt, and follow the guide!

Webmaster Steve Cubbins and I have decided to add three major columns to the site ...

By Framboise Gommendy
 & Steve Cubbins

 KALEIDOSCOPE
I love squash.
And if you’re reading these few lines, so do you.

And I love reading about squash, I love learning new tricks, I love understanding how it’s done, or how it should be or could be done, I love hearing stories about the game, from people who’ve been there, who’ve done it, got the Tee-shirt, wrote the book, and are still alive to talk and laugh about it.

And I realised something. There are so many people in this game with the knowledge, with the experience, with the stories, but with no real place to share them. Also, there are a lot of players, stars or not (or not yet ), at different stages of their life, of their careers, who may have a few things to say about Squash in general, or through their experience of it.

That is why we have decided to open Squash Player’s Website to them in our new “KALEIDOSCOPE” column.

So far a number of professionals – coaches, players, journalists, and more – have agreed to join us, contributing regular articles about all aspects of the game we all love.

But let’s make something clear here. Like the Squash Player Website, Kaleidoscope is in no way intended for personal, player, or brand promotion. Just a tribune for specialists of the game of squash.

This list of contributors will get bigger as we progress, and we hope Kaleidoscope will become an inescapable focal point for squash fanatics all around the globe.

  POINTS OF VIEW
Now, let’s talk about Points of View.

I hated it.

I hated it because it was giving anonymous cowards the opportunity to insult and ridicule professional or voluntary workers of the squash circuit. Here we were, players, referees, federation, journalists, coaches, working our butts off (oh well, I didn’t use it for so long, you must have wondered what happened to me…), only to be slashed down by no face know-it-alls.

And, as if that was not bad enough, you had surely noticed that Points of View was from time to time hijacked by silly, mischievous, or downright obnoxious postings, and it became simply too hard to police.

So, “Points of View” is DEAD, and Long Live “Have your Say”.

Hmmm. You may think, “looks pretty close to me”…

Not really ...

Open Letter to Steve Cubbins:
Can anything be done to improve
the content of POV?

What we are getting is crazy, meaningless drivel, the value of the content is nil, just smart comments.

The Answer is: YES!

HAVE YOUR SAY
“Have your say” will have the same angle as KALEIDOSCOPE. It will be a forum designed to allow people to “have their say”, but only people with a name, a phone number, an email address, and playing an active role on the squash circuit.

What it WON’T be is an open forum where any John or Jane Doe can pretty much say what ever goes through their supposed-to-be brain.

It will be a place where professionals of squash will be able to shout, praise, think; ask, wonder, learn, advise, and please, please, laugh.

Contribution to “Have your Say” will be by recommendation only, and aggressive, insulting, out of order contributions will not be put on air.

So, if you are interested in joining us, look out for the announcement of the new section and follow the sign-up instructions. But be warned – we reserve the right to refuse any contributors or articles.

  SAY IT IN FRENCH
And last, but not least, you may have noticed that, for a few weeks now, more and more bilingual reports have been posted.

Nothing to do with the fact I’m French of course….

Well, surprise surprise, Squash Player is opening a new French column, “Say it in French”, which will be…. IN FRENCH!

As well as French news, calendar, tournament notices and results, this French section will also feature its own “Kaleidoscope”, asking squash specialists of different horizons (coaches, players, physios, club owners, etc.) to work for the sake of Squash development and promotion.

And naturally the best English articles will be translated into French, and vice versa.
