18-Oct:
White too strong
for the Frenchman ...
Tim Garner reports from Oslo
John White won the Mamut Oslo Open
with an impressive display over Frenchman Renan Lavigne.
White controlled the match from the start entertaining the crowd with
his trademark kills and powerful drives, that had Lavigne scurrying from
corner to corner. However, he was soon leading 2-0 but a serious lapse
in concentration allowed his opponent to take the third 9-0 before White
got back on track to close out the match in four games.
Earlier, Peter Nicol had beaten friend, and fellow Eventis
director, Tim Garner in a relaxed 3/4 play-off. Nicol won the
first but Garner saved two match balls in the second to edge it 9/8
before running out of steam in the third as Nicol showed his class to
the capacity crowd.
With Norwegian Television in attendance all weekend the event
should raise the profile of the sport as they plan a sports show and an
entertainment show about the tournament this week.

17-Oct:
Lavigne shocks
Nicol in Oslo ...
Thanks
to the relationship between Eventis Sports Marketing and Mamut,
which saw the Norwegian business software company take title
sponsorship of the English Open this year, Norwegian squash fans are
being treated to a display of world class squash this weekend in the
Mamut Oslo Open.
Top seeded world number two Peter Nicol eased through local
opposition to reach the semi-final, where he suffered his first-ever
defeat at the hands of Frenchman Renan Lavigne.
Lavigne is set to face Scotland's John White in the final
after White beat Nicol's Eventis partner Tim Garner in their
semi-final. |
Renan Lavigne:
“Even if my first victory over Peter Nicol is not going to count for
the PSA ranking, it is for me a very beautiful moment, as Mr Peter
Nicol IS, no matter what, « The Boss ».
After winning the first game, I was already “in the red”, and
couldn’t do anything in the next 2 games, if only trying to recover
and wait for the storm to pass…
In the 4th, he started to drop a little, and I gave everything I
had. And it worked, but although I had a comfortable lead in the
5th, Peter had what looked like a “pride reaction”, and came back to
7/7.
We stayed at that score for a while, and once again, through
everything I had in the battle, and got my first ever victory over
the Man Himself…”
