Nicol to take on Power at Lambs
Eventis
Sports Marketing, in association with Lambs Health & Fitness, are
delighted to announce the first ever challenge match between two of the
greatest players in recent history.
Peter Nicol & Jonathan Power will go head to head in a £1,000
winner takes all challenge match at the world famous Lambs Club,
London, on Thursday 28th October 2004.
Probably the greatest rivalry in squash, the pair first met in Toronto
almost exactly 9 years ago. Nicol came out on top 3-1 on that occasion,
but the ascendancy has ebbed and flowed since then. They now have played
38 times with Nicol edging ahead 21-17 when Power was forced to retire
at last May’s Brit Super Series Finals. However, since then the PSA have
shortened the scoring system and Power has expressed a new found appetite
for the game, so the battle continues for who has bragging rights in
retirement!
Never before have the two played in a club setting and it is fitting, as
London’s premier squash club, that Lambs plays host to this mouth-watering
encounter. Once described by Jahangir Khan as the ‘most famous squash club in
the World’, Lambs boasts 9 courts and a show-court that squeezed in over
200 spectators for the National League final two years ago.
Unsurprisingly, this event is expected to match if not exceed this figure
and be a sell-out.
“This was the obvious setting for such a unique and high profile match”
commented Eventis director, and Lambs Head Professional, Tim Garner.
“Through owner Mike Corby’s support of squash, Lambs has remained
the number one squash club for the past couple of decades as shown by its
integral part in the British Open, National League & Jesters
Championships.”
“We are extremely excited about the prospect of bring together these two
protagonists who have done so much to raise the profile of squash in the
last decade. Incredibly, they both boast Commonwealth Gold medals, World
Open titles, British Open titles and have dominated the World no.1
position for much of the last 8 years!” explained Garner.
With Power having made the decision not to play the
Harris British Open
and instead focus on winning his own national open title, the Pace Credit
Union Canadian Classic, this will be the only opportunity for the British
public to see a Power/Nicol clash this year.
The evenings entertainment starts at 7pm, tickets are priced at £25.00, which
includes a buffet and a free drink, and can be bought in advance but only in
person from the Lambs reception.
The Lambs Club is located between
Barbican & Moorgate tube stations in the heart of the City.
