Malik Marches to Finnish Title
Juha Pekonen reports from Mikkeli
The Audience expected a tight final between these two
players who had both played very good squash during the whole
tournament.
The first game went quite easily to Malik while Naude was still feeling
out how the match would develop .
In the second game Naude got a better touch to her game, but still it
seemed that neither of the players had any weapons to use aqainst their
opponent. Malik was able to make good shots from stable positions,
finding time after moving to the ball. Naude started to make errors
during the important moments and the game went to Malik.
In the second game Naude fell, and at first it seemed that she had hurt
her knee, but after a few moments walking around it didn't seem to
bother her afterwards. In the beginning of third game Naude tried to
raise the tempo but Malik was able to carry on playing with her own
tactics, dominating the court.
As the game went on it seemed that the match had been physically harder
for Naude, allowing Malik to keep on shooting her powerful shots from
good positions, and she finished off the game and the match. |

Naude & Malik in
Finnish Final
The Netherlands' top seed Annelize Naude will face Wales's third
seed Tegwen Malik in the final of the Savcor Finnish Open in
Mikkeli.
Naude cruised into the final with a six-minute victory over Egypt's
third seed Amnah El Trabolsy. In the quarter-finals played earlier in
the day the Egyptian recovered from 2/1 down to beat England's Vicky
Lankester, but lacked motivation in the semi-final and made little
effort, complaining of a sore back against the Dutch top seed who was
clearly motivated to play.
The second semi-final provided much better entertainment
for the crowd. The first two games were shared, but as the match went on
Malik took control over second seed Dominique Lloyd-Walter, forcing the
Englishwoman to cover much more of the court. In the end Lloyd-Walter
had no energy left to challenge Malik, and the crowd provided prolonged
applause for the efforts of both players.
