World Masters Games
Attract 3,000 Squash Players
The World Masters Games Squash Championships attracted some 3,000 players
to Australia to compete in categories from Men's and Women's 35-39 Opens
to the Men's 80+ Open in Melbourne.
Top seed Derek Hunter, who represented Papua New Guinea in the Manchester
2002 Commonwealth Games, fought back from a game down to beat former
Australian Junior Champion Warren Miller 6-9, 9-1, 9-3, 9-2 to take the
Men's 35-39 Open gold medal.
Australia's 1981 World Open Champion Vicki Cardwell won her second World
Masters title in 12 months when she despatched local Premier League player
Caroline Houston 9-6, 9-0, 9-5 in the final of the Women's 45-49 Open
event. Cardwell took out the same age category at the 2001 World Masters
Squash Championships, also held in Melbourne during October last year.
The oldest squash competitor at the Games was the legendary Vic Hunt, who
at 87 competed in the Men's 70+ combined category and was still able to
win two out of three matches played.
Father of Australia's legendary seven-times British Open champion Geoff
Hunt, Vic entered the 80+ category and was awarded the Gold Medal. "The
truth is that he was the only entrant - obviously he had scared off all
opposition," quipped organiser Paul Vear, Executive Director of the
Victoria Squash Federation.
Whilst most of the gold medals went to Australians, the Men's 50-54 title
went to New Zealand's Tony Naughton; the Men's 75-79 to Cecil Cranswick, a
South African who beat Spaniard George Giri in the final; and two were
claimed by Englishmen. John Cox, twice a British Open Over-55 champion,
extended his medal tally with the World Masters Games Men's 70-74 Open
title, while Yorkshireman Richard Mosley secured the first significant
title of his life when he beat two Australians in succession to lift the
Men's 45-49 title.
"This is a fantastic achievement for Richard and there are sure to be huge
celebrations when he returns," said his coach and Yorkshire county
team-mate Ian Robinson. "Richard has trained hard for this title over the
past year here at Guildford University in Surrey and, at 46,
thoroughly deserves this breakthrough. Who knows where it could
lead," added Robinson.
