Golan wins Squash Player’s Player of the Month award
Spain’s
Borja Golan is Squash Player’s Male Player of the Month for March
after his best World Series performance since August 2014 in
reaching the semi-finals of the $150,000 Windy City Open in the USA
in February.
The 34-year-old followed up his 15th Spanish national title by
beating world champion Karim Abdel Gawad 3/1 in the quarter-finals
before losing to France’s Gregory Gaultier in the last four.
Golan’s 3/1 first-round win over Hong Kong’s Max Lee in Chicago was
the former world no.5’s first victory on the PSA Tour since last
September.
"I had a back injury and a few months ago I didn't know if I'd be
able to play again - I was 34 and my back wasn't responding well,"
said Golan, who had slipped to 21st in the world rankings.
"I kept doing the work and I was so happy to get back on court last
year. But I hadn't won a match until this week and I think that
match-winning confidence is so important to help you increase your
level.
"And today [against Gawad] I had nothing to lose. I knew I'd have to
be at my best and I took the opportunities. I defended well and
tried to be very aggressive as well and change the pace, and it
worked.”
