Gawad wins Squash Player’s Player of the Month
award

Abdel Gawad is an overwhelming winner of Squash Player’s Male Player
of the Month for December, after becoming world champion for the
first time and clinching his first World Series title.
The 25-year-old Egyptian followed up his stunning PSA World
Championship success as sixth seed in front of his home crowd in
Cairo by claiming the Qatar Classic in Doha.
“Being world champion and Qatar champion sounds good, really good,”
said Gawad, who climbed to a career-best second in the world
rankings on the back of his double triumph. “I’m living the dream.
“But next season I’m aware that I’ll have to make sure I’m very
consistent if I want to stay in competition with the top boys.
“When you are a world champion, people expect you to win and that
you have a big chance to win. That is a new element I had to
integrate into my preparation [for Qatar]. For the first time, I was
under pressure.”
