Elias Beats Salazar to Capture Edmonton Open Title

Peru’s Diego Elias overcame Mexico’s Cesar Salazar in the final of the 2016 ReidBuilt Homes Edmonton Open to lift his first ever PSA M35 title, beating the Mexican in straight games at the Royal Glenora Club.

World No.27 Elias has built on a strong start to the season - which saw him reach the semi-final stage of the NetSuite Open, PSA M100 tournament back in September - to break into the world’s top 30 for the first time in this month’s rankings, and he claimed a huge scalp over tournament top seed Daryl Selby in the last four in Edmonton to reach the final.

Salazar, meanwhile, downed Denmark’s Kristian Frost Olesen, England's Charles Sharpes and compatriot Alfredo Avila to book his place in a 13th PSA World Tour final.

It was Elias who put the early points on the board at the start of the encounter as he capitalised on any loose shots from Salazar to punish the Mexican World No.29, and he duly built up a two-game lead with 11-4 victories in both.

The two-time World Junior Champion continued his assault into the third game, going 5-0 ahead, and he fended off a resurgence from Salazar in the latter stages to take it 11-7 and earn his fourth career PSA World Tour title.
