Month award

Raneem
El Welily has been named Squash Player’s Female
Player of the Month for October after becoming the first
Egyptian woman to win the $100,000 Al-Ahram Open.
-
The world no.5 ended a PSA Tour title drought lasting six
months by edging out her top-seeded compatriot, Nour El
Sherbini, 3/2 in a thrilling final lasting just over an hour in
front of the Giza pyramids.
-
- The
27-year-old from Cairo looked to be cruising to victory
when she opened up a 2/0 lead, but El Sherbini battled
back to level, before El Welily claimed the decider in an 11-
5, 11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 11-7 success.
-
- She said
afterwards: “Nour is the best player out there at
the moment in women’s squash. She played a great match
and really pushed hard until the end.
-
- “I think
we both gave it everything we had – which is fitting
for this final in this amazing location.”
-
- El Welily
now moves on to the U.S. Open, where she will be bidding for her
first World Series triumph since the Windy City Open in March.
