Breaks Own Record as Oldest PSA Title Winner
Australian veteran Mike Corren shattered his own record for being
the oldest ever PSA World Tour title winner after beating South
Korea’s Ko Youngjo in the final of the City of Kalgoorlie & Boulder
Golden Open, PSA M5 tournament at the age of 42 years and 99 days.
Corren’s victory comes two years after his last triumph on the PSA
World Tour, which was at the 2014 edition of the Golden Open,
beating Jan Koukal in the final on that occasion.
This year’s final saw Corren storm through the early stages of the
tournament, with straight games victories over Nathan Lindner, Tsz
Kwan Lau and Rhys Dowling pitting the World No.246 up against
Youngjo, who had produced a stunning come back from 2-0 down against
England’s Adam Murrills in the semi-final.
Corren, appearing in his 74th PSA World Tour final, came through a
tense opening game on the tie-break, and gradually went up the gears
as he powered to the win in three, with an 18-16, 11-3, 11-6
scoreline seeing him emerge victorious at the YMCA Squash Centre.
The victory also sees Corren extend his lead as the most successful
active player on the PSA World Tour with 51 titles under his belt -
14 more than Egypt's three-time World Champion Ramy Ashour in second
place.
