Williams Secures Waikato Open Title
New Zealand’s Evan Williams lifted back-to-back PSA World Tour
titles for the first time in his career after defeating Adam
Murrills to capture the Squash Waikato Open, PSA M5 crown -
following up the Devoy Squash & Fitness PSA Open title he won
against the Englishman just a week before.
Williams had overcame Murrills by a 3-1 scoreline in the pair’s
previous encounter which was their first head-to-head clash on the
PSA World Tour.
Both players played long, structured rallies in a bid to move each
other around the court, with Williams narrowly having the edge as he
came out an 11-7 winner in the opener to take a one-game lead.
Seeking to avenge his Devoy Open defeat, Murrills came out strongly
in the second and took control of the centre of the court as
Williams began to hit some errors, which handed the game to Murrills.
But the reprieve turned out to be brief as a resurgent Williams
found himself back on top in the third as he punished any loose
shots from Murrills to go 2-1 up with an 11-4 triumph.
A brutal battle in the fourth game then played out in front of an
enraptured crowd at the Hamilton Squash & Tennis Club as both
players fought tooth and nail to emerge victorious. After a dramatic
tie-break, which saw points traded with gusto, Williams managed to
amass a match ball and he converted to take a hard-fought 15-13
victory and lift a fourth career PSA World Tour title.
