Andre and
Abbas Lift Lion Squash Cup Titles
Frenchman Christophe Andre and 15-year-old Egyptian Nada Abbas both
rose to claim silverware at the Lviv Karakal Lion Squash Cup, PSA M5
tournament and Lviv Harrow Lion Squash Cup, PSA W5 titles,
respectively after 3-0 wins in their final fixtures in Ukraine.
Andre had won three of his previous four PSA World Tour events
coming into this tournament and put in a number of performances of
note as he battled through two consecutive five-game affairs in
respective quarter-final and semi-final fixtures against Martin Svec
and Iker Pajares Bernabeu.
His opponent in the final was top seed Ammar Altamimi, who had
dispatched Spains Bernat Jaume 3-2 to secure his place in the
showpiece finale.
Andre dominated the encounter from the outset, with his vicious
drives consigning Altamimi to the back of the court, allowing the
World No.128 to attack at the front.
The number three seed closed out an 11-6, 11-5, 11-4 triumph to
capture his second PSA World Tour title of 2016 and the sixth of his
career.
Meanwhile, Abbas became the second 15-year-old Egyptian in 2016 to
win a PSA World Tour event, after Rowan Elaraby last month, as she
defeated Austrias Birgit Coufal to win her maiden Tour title.
Abbas came into the final full of confidence after seeing off
pre-tournament favourite Chloe Mesic in the last four and was hugely
impressive in her match against Coufal.
The teenager, who currently sits at a career-high World No.72
ranking, took the win via an 11-4, 11-7, 11-9 scoreline to break her
PSA World Tour title duck and outline her intentions to join the
Egyptian contingent towards the top of the World Rankings.
