Egyptian star Ali Farag has been named Male Player of the Month for
February by the London-based Squash Player magazine after winning
the $70,000 Motor City Open in Detroit, USA, in January.
The 23-year-old seventh seed from Cairo captured the most lucrative
title of his career by knocking out favourite Mohamed Elshorbagy,
third seed Mathieu Castagnet and no.2 seed Nick Matthew in
successive rounds.
“This is by far my biggest win to date, in terms of everything
really,” he said. “I had never beaten the world no.1, nor the world
no.3, let alone in the same week. It is also my biggest tournament
so far in terms of prize money and points.”
The world no.22 admitted his shock defeat by Ramit Tandon, the world
no.255 from India, in the first qualifying round of the Tournament
of Champions earlier in the month had served a crucial lesson.
“I used to put way too much pressure on myself before every match,”
he said. “That loss made me realise that it is just a game and I
started approaching matches like any practice match. I became more
relaxed and started to enjoy my game more. Hence I found my shots
and was able to execute my attacking way of play.”
