Salazar Seals Minneapolis Title

Mexico’s Arturo Salazar came up trumps in the final of the Life Time Fitness Minneapolis Open, PSA M10 event to beat second seed Peter Creed and lift his first PSA World Tour title in over four years.

The 27-year-old came through a mammoth five-game-thriller against tournament surprise package Clinton Leeuw in the semi-final while Peter Creed saw off Sebastiaan Weenink to book his final berth.

It was the Welshman Creed who started the better of the two with his typically all-action game enabling him to edge the opener by an 11-9 margin of victory. Salazar fought back though in the second to restore parity at the midway point of the match.

The World No.113 continued his momentum into the third, taking the game 11-4 after some swashbuckling squash enable him to move Creed off the ’T’ and pick up a number of points at the front of the court.

Salazar kept his game plan up in the fourth and final game to wrap up a 9-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-2 victory to capture his seventh career PSA World Tour crown.

Result - Final: Life Time Fitness Minneapolis Open 2015
South Africa’s Clinton Leeuw overcame number seven seed Amaad Fareed in the opening round of the Life Time Fitness Minneapolis Open, PSA M10 event to book his place in the quarter-final stage of a PSA World Tour event for the first time in 2015.

Leeuw built up a 2-1 lead mid-way through the match and, despite a revival from Fareed in game four, held firm to complete an 11-7, 8-11, 11-2, 6-11, 14-12 victory.

He will meet number one seed Declan James in a tough quarter-final clash after the Nottingham-born Englishman kickstarted his bid to win a sixth successive PSA World Tour title with a 3-0 defeat of wildcard David Ryan.

Charlie Johnson is the only qualifier left in the tournament after he beat Chris van der Salm 3-1 to seal his place in the last eight. Number four seed Sebastiaan Weenink will be his opponent there after the Dutchman saw off Ben Grindrod by the same scoreline.

Peter Creed got his event off to a winning start with a sweeping win over India’s Vikram Malhotra in their opening round tie. He will face Thoboki Mohohlo in the quarter-final after the South African downed Ireland’s Brian Byrne.

Elsewhere, Evan Williams and Arturo Salazar will go head-to-head in the next round after they claimed respective wins over Faraz Khan and Alex Noakes to advance.
