Romiglio secures first
ever World Tour title
Number four seed Leandro Romiglio secured
his first ever PSA World Tour title with a 3-1 triumph over Belgium’s
Jan van den Herrewegen in the final of the BDO Northfield Cup, PSA M5
tournament.
Romiglio, who was appearing at his 53rd PSA World Tour event, booked his
place in the final courtesy of fine victories against Sunny Seth and
second seed Reiko Peter in the quarter-final and semi-final,
respectively. Van den Herrewegen meanwhile was coming off the back of
stunning top seed Richie Fallows in his semi-final fixture.
The first game was a tight affair with both combatants contributing to
some lengthy and entertaining rallies. Romiglio pulled away at the end
of the game due to some unforced errors from van den Herrewegen and,
despite the Belgian saving two match balls, held firm to claim the
opening game 11-7. Van den Herrewegen stormed into an early lead in game
two, mixing up some fine length with some well hidden deception and he
went on to level things up.
World No.146 Romiglio ensured that there wasn’t to be a change of
momentum in the third as he unleashed a barrage of tight drives in an
attempt to ramp up the pressure. This method seemed to take its toll on
van den Herrewegen as he succumbed to an 11-3 defeat in Romiglio’s
favour.
The fourth game continued along a similar vein with Romiglio playing a
very consistent brand of squash. A tin from van den Herrewegen gave
Romiglio the championship ball and he made no mistake to seal an 11-7,
5-11, 11-3, 11-4 victory to break his PSA World Tour title duck.
